What is the Acquisition Programs (2021-2024) Call?

Grant Description
The grant supports publicly accessible Dutch museums to purchase or commission contemporary art and design works (post-1945) that fit their collection plans. It aims to enhance the quality, coherence and visibility of the national art collection by funding major structural acquisitions or artist commissions for permanent or semi-permanent public display.
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• Strengthen the quality, coherence, and visibility of the Netherlands Art Collection by adding thematically and historically significant works.

• Enrich and complement the Dutch National Cultural Heritage Collection and other major museum holdings.

• Enhance public engagement through well‐conceived presentation plans that attract and retain target audiences.

• Support professional development and fair remuneration of Dutch visual artists through commissions.

• Foster institutional collaboration and long-term stewardship of museum collections under best practices for loans, preservation, and governance.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Applicant institution must be a publicly accessible Dutch museum listed in the Museums Register, managing a substantial national or international collection of contemporary visual art and/or design.

• Permanent annual acquisition budget of at least €50,000 (public or private funding), with at least 50% spent on Dutch or Dutch-assimilated visual artists/designers.

• Proposed acquisition or commission must fit the museum’s published collection plan and be of demonstrable importance to the Netherlands’ National Cultural Heritage Collection.

• Objects must be displayed to the public immediately or as soon as possible, and loaned free of charge to Dutch institutions under the Basic Principles for Smarter Loan Transactions.

• Applications may be joint (multiple institutions) or in association with an artist.

• Commissioned artists must be professional (minimum one year’s practice and registered with Kamer van Koophandel, or at least three years higher art education plus practice) and active in the Dutch visual arts community.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• No acquisitions already publicly funded or reasonably fundable from the museum’s regular budget.

• Acquired works remain part of the Dutch National Cultural Heritage Collection; any disposal requires Mondriaan Fund authorization and must follow the Guideline for Disposal of Museum Objects.

• Institutions must guarantee proper preservation through constructional measures, climate control, and security.

• All applicants must subscribe to the Dutch Fair Practice Code, Governance Code for Culture, and Diversity & Inclusion Code.

• For commissions: applicant’s own financial contribution must be proportionate; budgets must include realistic artist wages in compliance with the Wage Guideline; partial reimbursement available for guideline compliance.
