Supports Dutch art museums in acquiring and exhibiting significant post-1945 visual art and design aligned with their collection plans to strengthen the Dutch National Cultural Heritage Collection

• Strengthened inter-institutional collaboration and added value for the national collection

• Commissioned works that expand contemporary artistic production and enrich the cultural heritage
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Applicant: publicly accessible Dutch art museums (listed in the Museums Register) with an ongoing post-1945 visual art/design programme and a substantial collection of national/international significance

• Must have a permanent annual acquisition budget ≥ €50,000 (public or private funding)

• At least 50% of the Mondriaan Fund grant must be used to acquire works by Dutch artists/designers

• Commitment to loan works to Dutch institutions free of charge under the Basic Principles for Smarter Loan Transactions

• Long-term retention of acquisitions in the Netherlands National Cultural Heritage Collection; disposal only with Mondriaan Fund authorization and per disposal guidelines

• Guarantee of proper preservation (constructional provisions, climate control, security)

• Subscription to the Fair Practice Code, Culture Governance Code and Diversity & Inclusion Code

• Grant period: 2 years; amount determined per application (budget available €2,800,000; 2023 average award ~€130,000)

• Application via online system once every two years (deadline 14 August 2025, 16:00 CET); 3-month processing for new accounts

• Submission requirements: KVK extract; organisation profile; collection & acquisition policy (max 35 pp); presentation plan (max 5 pp); annual report; acquisition budget & financing plan (max 2 pp); bank details; (if applicable) artist commission budget, fee calculation, consent letter
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Ineligible: private museums, art schools, post-academic institutions

• Grant does not cover restoration, conservation, transport, documentation, digitisation or acquisitions already subsidised by national cultural funds

• No retrospective funding

• Collaborative applications allowed, but each institution submits its own application

• Artist commissions: fees paid by applicant (not subsidised); applicant may seek separate Artist’s Fee grant if eligible; realistic fee must be budgeted using prescribed calculators

• Funding contingent on positive advisory committee recommendation and available budget; prioritisation may occur if demand exceeds funds
