What is the Advancing knowledge on the impacts of micro- and nanoplastics on human health Call?

Grant Description
This call funds research and innovation actions to strengthen scientific evidence on the health impacts of micro- and nanoplastics exposure in living and working environments. Projects must develop and standardise analytical methods, models and reference materials, conduct mechanistic, observational and biomonitoring studies, assess occupational and environmental exposure routes, explore mitigation measures and alternative materials, and integrate social science and humanities for societal impac...
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Funded projects should deliver results that contribute to most of the following:
• Up-to-date scientific evidence, standards, tools and methodologies to support environmental and health policies reducing MNP exposure and preventing health impacts;
• FAIR, high-quality data on realistic human exposures to MNPs and their health effects, accessible to public authorities and the scientific community;
• Enhanced citizen awareness of MNP health impacts and promotion of protective behaviours that also reduce environmental harm;
• Support to industry in rigorous assessment of product safety and sustainability concerning MNPs;
• Closure of major knowledge gaps on the health impacts of MNP exposure and promotion of mitigation measures grounded in robust evidence;
• Evidence-based guidance for public authorities and regulators to design effective health policies addressing MNP risks.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

Proposals must:
• Strengthen the scientific evidence on human health impacts of MNP exposure across living and working environments, covering all exposure routes (inhalation, ingestion, dermal);
• Use realistic concentrations and a variety of particle sizes, shapes and chemical compositions to ensure environmental relevance;
• Advance comparability and reproducibility between studies through standardised methods and protocols;
• Account for recent policy developments, address policy gaps and support standardisation of analytical methods;
• Address gender and sex-related differences where appropriate;
• Encourage use of non-animal experimental methods when they yield data of comparable validity;
• Incorporate effective social sciences and humanities contributions;
• Comply with FAIR data principles, adopting relevant data standards and sharing/access good practices.
