What is the Airborne capabilities for supporting reducing ATM environmental footprint Call?

Grant Description
This call funds research and innovation actions to develop airborne capabilities that reduce the environmental footprint of air traffic management, including wake energy retrieval operations, energy-based operations, environment-driven trajectory optimisation, environmentally friendly terminal area operations, voluntary climate-impact mitigation for individual flights, and geometric altimetry solutions. It supports new models, algorithms, aircraft and ground systems, operational concepts, and in...
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Achieve significant advances in IR-5-04 and IR-3-08 of the European ATM Master Plan by delivering:
• Airborne capabilities for reducing the ATM environmental footprint through wake energy retrieval, energy-based operations, and environment-driven trajectory optimisation.
• Geometric altimetry solutions enhancing safety, efficiency and environmental performance (barometric-to-geometric transitions, mixed-mode operations, vertical separation minima reduction, charting and HMI improvements).
• Validated concepts of operations, prototypes and support tools ready for certification, standardisation and global deployment via ICAO.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

Proposals must:
• Address one or more of the illustrative R&I elements (but may propose additional justified elements aligned with the European ATM Master Plan): – Environmentally driven trajectory planning (CO₂/non-CO₂ effects, aircraft/climate models, optimisation algorithms, ATM constraint integration, FMS/EFB/FOC updates) – Wake energy retrieval (concept of operations for high-frequency pairings, ground/airborne technical developments, support tools, ATCO automation, A/A communications, flight-plan equipage, network monitoring) – Environmentally friendly TMA operations (dynamic aircraft configuration, PRT lateral paths, optimal vertical profiles, FMS/autopilot enhancements, strategic/tactical constraints, new airspace management techniques) – Voluntary flight climate mitigation in low-density/complexity airspace (multi-objective FOC/EFB updates with climate models, unusual flight profiles, flagging, NM/ATC system adaptations, ATFM workload assessment, eco-sensitive area concepts) – Geometric altimetry (early geometric approach transition, geometric/barometric mixed operations up to and above the transition layer, HMI, FMS/autopilot impacts, charting, separation minima, fuel-burn analysis, general aviation and drone interoperability).
• Develop sufficiently accurate models, prototypes, algorithms and procedures.
• Integrate ground and airborne prototypes and conduct validation activities.
• Consider standardisation, certification, and global adoption via ICAO.
