What is the BiodivConnect 2026 Call?

Grant Description
Transnational research grant supporting innovative projects to restore ecosystem functioning, integrity and connectivity through holistic, systemic and integrated approaches. Addresses setting operational restoration targets, scaling restoration efforts and ensuring long-term resilience to halt and reverse biodiversity decline, producing actionable knowledge for transformative change.
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• Generation of actionable, practically usable knowledge and tools to guide nature restoration practices that halt and reverse biodiversity loss.
• Defined, coherent and operational restoration targets and indicators enabling objective- or reference-based assessments of ecosystem functioning, integrity and connectivity.
• Transferable and scalable restoration methods tailored to diverse ecological, socio-economic and policy contexts.
• Demonstrated long-term resilience and sustainability of restoration efforts under multiple pressures, including climate change.
• Strengthened transnational research networks and enhanced interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration, including effective stakeholder co-production.
• Contributions to policy-relevant recommendations and science-policy interfacing to support European and global biodiversity commitments by 2030 and beyond.
• Engagement frameworks and citizen science approaches that foster societal participation and uptake of restoration outcomes.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Thematic scope: Restoration of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, integrity and connectivity across all ecosystem types (terrestrial, freshwater, marine) and world regions.
• Strategic alignment: Contribute to European and global biodiversity commitments (e.g. Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework) and Biodiversa+ Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda.
• Research approach: Holistic, systemic, integrated and future-proofed; must address at least one of the three topics: – Topic 1: Operational restoration targets and success measurement (including shifting baselines and socio-cultural contexts). – Topic 2: Transferability and up-scaling of restoration efforts across socio-economic and environmental contexts. – Topic 3: Long-term resilience and sustainability of restoration interventions under climate and other pressures.
• Consortium requirements: Minimum of three research teams from different funding countries, including at least two from EU Member States or Associated Countries.
• Interdisciplinarity: Mandatory; transdisciplinary engagement with non-academic stakeholders strongly encouraged.
• Scale: From local to regional to transnational and global; must include evaluation components.

• Co-funded by the European Commission (Horizon Europe) and 32 participating countries, with a provisional budget of ~€40 million.
• Eligible countries: Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Faroe Islands, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tunisia, Türkiye.
• Application: Two-step in English only – Step 1: Pre-proposal (fit to scope, novelty, impact); Step 2: Full proposal (scientific excellence, implementation quality and efficiency, societal/policy impact and stakeholder engagement).
• National/regional eligibility and evaluation rules may apply per participating country.
• Deadlines (preliminary): Launch on 9 September 2025; pre-proposal and full proposal deadlines between September and November 2025. Official call documents and detailed guidelines to be published early September 2026.
• Mandatory use of Biodiversa+ Partner Search Tool; recommended attendance at 11 September 2025 information webinar.
• Projects must comply with Horizon Europe ethics and open science requirements.
