Grant Description
This call seeks research proposals to advance cellular agriculture processes and products in precision fermentation and cultured meat and seafood. It addresses the need to scale up production and reduce costs of cell-based animal products without using live animals. Funded projects should develop technological and biological innovations for cost-effective large-scale manufacturing.

- Demonstrated reduction in production costs for precision-fermented ingredients and cultured meat & seafood
• Scalable bioprocesses validated at pilot scale (e.g., bioreactor runs, pilot facility data)
• Novel or improved cell lines and microbial strains optimized for high-yield production
• Optimized culture media formulations with reduced cost and increased efficiency
• Advanced bioreactor designs and downstream processing workflows ready for industrial adoption
• Robust techno-economic and life-cycle assessments showing commercial viability
• Clear routes to impact including industry partnerships, knowledge utilisation plans and pathways to market
• Strengthened national research-industry consortia contributing to the goals of the National Growth Fund Project on Cellular Agriculture
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

- Research proposals must address topics strictly within research line A (precision fermentation) or B (cultured meat & seafood) as defined in paragraph 2.1 of the Call for Proposals
• Applicants: main and co-applicants employed by a Dutch research organisation (university, university of applied sciences, TO2 institute or equivalent)
• Consortium composition: at least one main applicant and at least one co-funder; co-applicants and cooperation partners optional
• Budget: maximum €1,371,836 NWO funding per project; co-funder contributions of at least 20% of total budget (cash or in kind) mandatory
• Project duration: maximum 5 years
• Staffing: at least 3 research positions (minimum 1 PhD student, maximum 1 Engineering Doctorate; postdoc positions count if ≥2 years at 1.0 FTE)
• Eligible costs: personnel, equipment, knowledge utilisation
• Proposal language: English
• Submission: via ISAAC system by 13 November 2025, 14:00 CET; main applicant must submit
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

- Mandatory co-funding of ≥20% of total project budget (in cash or in kind)
• Maximum of one Engineering Doctorate position per project
• Project scope strictly limited to topics listed in paragraph 2.1 of the Call for Proposals
• Optional matchmaking event on 25 June 2025 (not mandatory for application)
• Responsible research data management: Data Management Plan to be prepared after grant award and before project start
• Assessment conducted by an internal, independent committee (no external referees)
• Mandatory application annexes: budget form; co-funding declaration for each co-funder; if applicable, declaration of support from cooperation partner(s); guarantee of continuity in project supervision
• Main applicant must have or create an ISAAC account at least one workday before submission
