What is the Citizen Science Hubs Call?

Grant Description
This programme aims to strengthen knowledge, expertise and support for citizen science and science communication within Dutch research organisations by establishing citizen science hubs as centralised points for expertise, resources and infrastructure to coordinate and support citizen science activities.

- Strengthened institutional capacity in citizen science and societal engagement through the establishment of well-resourced Citizen Science Hubs
• Centralised support services for citizen science projects, including guidance, data management, community building and communication
• Durable integration of Citizen Science Hubs within host organisations’ structures and long-term sustainability plans
• Expanded and reinforced networks with regional and national societal partners, enhancing collaboration and outreach
• Defined service portfolio and operational procedures for hubs, building on existing offerings and addressing local and thematic needs
• Measurable impact on research quality, public engagement and potential business innovation, with ongoing monitoring and adaptive management of hub activities
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

- Applicants must hold a master’s degree and be employed (permanently or on a contract covering the project duration) by one of: Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences, university medical centres, KNAW/NWO institutes, or Naturalis Biodiversity Center
• Maximum one application per research organisation; applications must be coordinated internally and include a mutual statement of at least 1.5 FTE own contribution
• Budget may include personnel costs only for specified positions and material costs (up to 20% of the grant), including unlimited student involvement as material costs
• Applications must be written in English and submitted via the ISAAC system using the provided templates and forms
• Mandatory annexes: budget (Excel), joint own-contribution statement (PDF), statement of adequate project supervision (if applicable)
• Assessment based on four criteria: team composition (30%), quality of project plan (40%), existing network and network expansion (20%), and impact (10%)
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

- Only one proposal per organisation (lead or co-applicant) is permitted; ensure internal alignment before submission
• Applicants must submit via ISAAC, using the prescribed application form and annex templates; no additional annexes allowed
• Annexes must be uploaded separately: budget as an Excel file, all other annexes as unencrypted PDFs
• Material costs are capped at 20% of the total grant; personnel costs restricted to the listed roles and functions
• Student involvement must be budgeted under material costs; there is no limit on the number of students
• Proposal must be submitted by the deadline (14 March 2025, 14:00 CET) in English
