What is the Computing Time on National Computing Facilities Call?

Grant Description
This call provides researchers access to national advanced computer systems—including the Snellius supercomputer, Grid/Spider data processing infrastructure, SURF Research Cloud (HPC Cloud and Cloud Research Consultancy) and the Dutch share of the pre-exascale supercomputer LUMI—to solve large computational and data-intensive scientific challenges by allocating computing time, data services and technical expertise.
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• Allocation of large-scale compute and data-storage resources enabling technical-scientific and data-intensive research projects to address major computational challenges.

• Enhanced research throughput and innovation by granting access to cutting-edge national HPC infrastructure and expert support.

• Optimized utilization of Snellius, LUMI and SURF Research Cloud resources.

• Strengthened reproducibility and data stewardship via mandatory Data Management Plans.

• Generation of high-quality scientific results, publications and follow-on grant proposals leveraging national computing capabilities.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Eligible applicants: researchers with a tenured or tenure-track position (or equivalent appointment covering project duration) at one of the specified Dutch research organizations (universities, UMCs, KNAW/NWO institutes, NKI, Max Planck Institute Nijmegen, NCB Naturalis, ARCNL, Princess Máxima Center, RIVM, KNMI, WUR/DLO, NLR, Deltares, Marin).

• Excludes holders of zero-hours contracts. Other organizations may qualify if they satisfy cumulative conditions per NWO Grant Rules Art. 1.1(4).

• Project durations: maximum 2 years (Snellius, Data Processing, HPC Cloud, Cloud Research Consultancy); maximum 1 year on LUMI.

• Request thresholds define "large amounts":
– Snellius: >1 000 000 SBU (CPU and/or GPU)
– LUMI: >500 000 CPU-core-hours or >14 000 GPU-hours or >100 000 TB-hours storage
– Data Processing (Grid/Spider): >1 000 000 CPU-core-hours or >10 000 GPU-hours or >200 TB online storage or >300 TB tape storage
– HPC Cloud: >50 000 CPU-core-hours or >5 000 GPU-hours
– Cloud Research Consultancy: >100 000 CPU-core-hours

• Applications below these thresholds (‘small amounts’) must be submitted directly via SURF’s portal for a maximum 1-year duration.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Continuous call with final submission deadline 30 December 2025, 14:00 CET; no intermediate deadlines.

• Applications must be in English and submitted via the ISAAC system using the 2025 application form.
