What is the Coordinated call with India on waste to renewable hydrogen Call?

Grant Description
This call addresses the need to develop innovative technologies for producing renewable hydrogen from non-recyclable biogenic wastes such as agricultural, forest, sewage sludge and industrial wastewater resources. It aims to enhance resource efficiency and carbon-to-hydrogen yield, reduce greenhouse gas and environmental footprints, lower hydrogen production costs, and ensure process safety. Projects must include advanced catalysts, reactor intensification, side-stream utilization, feedstock pre...
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Project results are expected to:
• Enable EU and Indian renewable hydrogen producers and consumers to access more sustainable, safer and more affordable biogenic-waste-based hydrogen production technologies
• Expand the portfolio of renewable hydrogen production concepts available to technology developers in the EU and India
• Facilitate mutual learning and technology exchange among stakeholders on biogenic-waste-to-hydrogen processes in the EU and India
• Strengthen and support long-term cooperation between EU and India researchers, institutions and industries active in W2rH research
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

The proposal must:
• Focus on non-recyclable biogenic feedstocks (agricultural, forest, municipal biogenic wastes, sewage sludge, industrial wastewaters)
• Develop or integrate biochemical and/or thermochemical W2rH pathways with improved carbon-to-hydrogen yield and reduced GHG footprint (ideally net negative)
• Demonstrate significant reductions in environmental footprint (pollution, water consumption) and production cost versus state-of-the-art renewable hydrogen methods
• Employ advanced catalysts, reactor intensification or process intensification methods
• Incorporate the valorisation of side-streams (aqueous/gaseous) through further biological, electrochemical or catalytic conversion
• Include feedstock pretreatment, sorting and post-treatment steps necessary for hydrogen purification
• Conduct regional/local feedstock supply cost assessments and propose feedstock mobilisation improvements using digitalisation tools
• Perform preliminary economic, socioeconomic and environmental sustainability analyses on a life-cycle basis (land, water, biodiversity, GHG, social impacts) and compare W2rH production costs to current benchmarks
• Develop an overall process concept with detailed flowsheet modelling for mass and energy flows
• Integrate a ‘hydrogen safety planning and management’ plan addressing leakages and system safety
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Organic wastes not of biogenic origin are out of scope
• Proposals must address exploitation of results and IPR management
• Projects must be linked to an Indian coordinated project funded by MNRE, with identical start date, duration and targets, and include at least one work package for joint activities
• Legal entities in India may only participate as associated partners
• Budgets and efforts for EU and Indian projects must be balanced and matched
• Proposals must detail coordination mechanisms, cross-references to the linked project proposal, and tasks/efforts of the coordinated research activities
• Sufficient budget must be allocated for attendance at periodic EU-India joint networking and coordination meetings
