What is the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) evolution: improved soil-vegetation-atmosphere modelling and data assimilation of atmospheric constituents Call?

Grant Description
This research and innovation action aims to improve and expand operational global and regional atmospheric composition models by developing advanced soil-vegetation-atmosphere parameterizations, trace gas and aerosol surface models, data assimilation techniques and high-resolution deposition and pollen emission models. It addresses eutrophication, acidification and public health impacts of pollen and volatile organic compounds, producing open-licensed tools and methodologies for integration into...
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Project results are expected to contribute to:
• Accurate simulation of biogenic fluxes of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and other atmospheric constituents in numerical models;
• Enhanced monitoring of environmental policies addressing eutrophication and acidification of soils and ecosystems, supporting regulatory reporting commitments;
• Improved management of soils and vegetation to reduce public health impacts from pollen and VOC exposures.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

Projects must address all expected outcomes by:
• Implementing advanced parameterizations and numerical models for the soil-vegetation-atmosphere interface and evapotranspiration;
• Developing and validating surface/sub-models for dynamic sources and sinks of trace gases and aerosols, ready for operational CAMS integration;
• Refining deposition flux estimation techniques, including uncertainty quantification;
• Establishing data assimilation frameworks combining in situ and satellite observations to produce high-resolution deposition maps;
• Expanding the CAMS pollen modelling portfolio to cover additional allergenic species and exploring global pollen dispersion modelling;
• Integrating satellite-based retrievals to improve dry deposition and biogenic emission estimates;
• Demonstrating the value of improved analyses, forecasts and reanalyses through concrete downstream applications;
• Ensuring results, software and methodologies are transferable to Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) operational systems;
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Proposals must comply with all Horizon Europe admissibility, eligibility, financial, operational capacity and exclusion criteria (General Annexes A–G).
• If satellite-based Earth observation or PNT data are used, beneficiaries must employ Copernicus and/or Galileo/EGNOS services.
• Appropriate involvement of Copernicus Entrusted Entities to define result reuse, exploitation and IPR conditions is mandatory.
• Developed software must be open licensed.
• Particular attention to complementarities with other Copernicus services; collaboration to strengthen service integration is encouraged.
• Encouraged to build on or collaborate with existing EU projects (SYLVA, CERTAINTY, Clean Cloud).
• Joint Research Centre (JRC) may participate as a consortium member.
• Integration of the gender dimension (sex and gender analysis) only if directly relevant to the research objectives.
