Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

- Strengthened understanding, experience-sharing and science-policy interfaces among agri-food system actors to improve knowledge flows and support development of an effective AU-EU AKIS aligned with the FNSSA roadmap and SDGs.
• R&I actors in Africa and the EU (farmers, advisors, business and service providers, consumers) are better informed, coordinated and integrated within a well-functioning joint AU-EU AKIS that supports the climate transition and implementation of agroecological approaches.
• Enhanced bi-continental exchange of experiences and best practices among AKIS actors, leading to tangible business, product, service, development and employment opportunities in Africa and Europe, and improved resilience, adaptation and sustainability of agriculture and food systems.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

- Address AKIS as combined organisation and knowledge flows (technological, non-technological and social innovation) for agriculture and related fields.
• Focus on agroecological transition, long-term sustainability, resilience and climate adaptation in African agriculture in line with the FNSSA roadmap and Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework.
• Contribute to short-term (actions 4 & 5) and medium-term (actions 1 & 3) priorities of the AU-EU Innovation Agenda Green Transition pillar.
• Align with conclusions of the 2023 AU-EU Agriculture Ministerial Conference and support the African Continental Free Trade Area.
• Contribute to Union for the Mediterranean R&I roadmaps on water scarcity, drought, sustainable production and biodiversity under climate change.
• Implement the multi-actor approach with active involvement of public authorities, advisory services and farmer organisations.
• Adopt an inclusive approach integrating local and indigenous knowledge with scientific and technological expertise through mutual learning.
• Consider synergies with relevant Green Deal destinations and R&I partnerships on FNSSA, Climate Change & Sustainable Energy, Agroecology, Animal Health & Welfare, Sustainable Blue Economy, Sustainable Food Systems and Agriculture of Data.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

- Funding form: Lump sum grants under HORIZON-AG-LS rules.
• Consortia must include at least three independent legal entities established in African Union member states; entities from all AU member states are exceptionally eligible for EU funding.
• International organisations with headquarters in an EU Member State or Associated Country may participate and receive funding.
• Proposals must apply the mandatory multi-actor approach and meet page-limit and layout requirements as per the Horizon Europe General Annexes.
• Mandatory close cooperation with the FNSSA International Research Consortium and active collaboration with the FARM 2 FORK-05 project.
• Proposals must explicitly reference and contribute to specified AU-EU Innovation Agenda actions, AU-EU policy dialogue priorities, FNSSA and Kunming-Montréal commitments.
• Inclusive approach: integrate indigenous and local practices alongside innovation.
• JRC may join the consortium; proposals should plan for synergies with PANAP and the EC Knowledge Centre for Global Food and Nutrition Security.
