Grant Description
This call supports research and innovation actions to develop and demonstrate agroecological approaches in Africa through living labs and lighthouses. It addresses climate resilience, biodiversity preservation and sustainable agriculture, aiming to accelerate the adoption of fair and inclusive strategies by farmers, advisors and policymakers, strengthen coordination among African actors, and enhance the climatic, environmental and socio-economic performance of agroecological farming systems.

Accelerated availability, accessibility and adoption by farmers, advisors and policymakers of fair, inclusive strategies improving productivity and sustainability of African agriculture while addressing climate challenges and optimising ecological processes with biodiversity co-benefits; strengthened coordination and experience-sharing among researchers and agricultural actors in Africa towards achievement of the SDGs and alignment with the FNSSA roadmap; enhanced climatic, environmental and socio-economic performance of African agroecological farming practices; tangible business, product, service and quality employment opportunities in Africa and Europe emerging from R&I efforts

Scope Requirements

Contribute to European Green Deal priorities, AU-EU High-Level Policy Dialogue on STI and FNSSA/Climate & Energy partnerships, AU and EU climate objectives, and Kunming-Montréal Biodiversity Framework; develop innovative tools/approaches to improve resilience, adaptation and sustainability of African agricultural and food systems; integrate local/indigenous knowledge with scientific and technological expertise; implement the ‘multi-actor approach’ with adequate involvement of farming sector, civil society and policy actors; align with short- and medium-term AU-EU Innovation Agenda (Green actions 4 & 5; medium-term actions 1 & 3), 2023 AU-EU Agriculture Ministerial conclusions, African Continental Free Trade Area, UfM R&I roadmaps on climate, and support EU Mission “A soil deal for Europe”; build on Horizon 2020/Europe FNSSA and De SIRA agroecology projects; create dedicated tasks and resources for synergies with the EU Partnership “Agroecology” and AKIS FNSSA project; encourage participation of non-EU/AU Mediterranean countries; ensure gender, disability, age, socioeconomic, ethnic/cultural and sexual orientation dimensions are considered

Two-stage call: stage 1 deadline 4 Sept 2025 17:00 Brussels time; stage 2 deadline 18 Feb 2026 17:00 Brussels time; lump-sum funding under Horizon-AG-LS framework; maximum 30% of EU contribution may be used for financial support to third parties (grants up to €60 000 each); consortia must include at least three independent legal entities established in African Union member states, with two in the same AU region; international organisations with HQ in Member/Associated States and legal entities in all AU member states are eligible; the JRC may join as a beneficiary; compliance with proposal page-limit, layout, eligibility, financial/operational capacity, exclusion and evaluation criteria per Work Programme General Annexes; adherence to MGA, application and evaluation form templates, and Lump-sum Decision
