What is the Digital solutions for autonomy for space transportation systems, design and simulation tools – targeting demonstration Call?

Grant Description
This call supports mid to high technology readiness level research and innovation in digital technologies for commercial space transportation within the co-programmed European Partnership on Globally Competitive Space Systems. It aims to reduce launch service costs, enhance availability and reliability through reusable and modular solutions, focusing on health monitoring systems, smart avionics, low-cost sensors and AI-based data management. Projects must demonstrate on-ground or in-orbit use of...
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Projects are expected to deliver one or more of the following:
• Remote identification and localization of structural damage—such as cracks, corrosion, delamination or weakening—within space transportation systems before critical failure.
• Autonomous thermo-mechanical monitoring capable of tracking temperature variations, mechanical behavior and load profiles to predict and autonomously prevent failures.
• Significant cost reduction, enhanced availability and improved reliability through reusability and modular design.
• Development and deployment of global space-based services, applications and data.
• Strengthening of EU space sector competitiveness and strategic autonomy by providing off-the-shelf modular solutions and products that meet launcher manufacturers’ needs.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

Projects must address: 1) R&I on advanced digital sensor technologies tailored to new space transportation; 2) smart avionics designs prioritizing modularity and reusability; 3) integrated health monitoring systems enabling real-time subsystem monitoring through all mission phases; 4) structural health monitoring solutions for damage detection and thermo-mechanical monitoring; 5) low-cost/low-mass sensor development and efficient avionics; 6) ground and flight software for data handling, potentially leveraging AI; 7) on-ground or in-orbit demonstrations focused on software and digital tools; 8) rapid transition to commercial use via demonstrations; 9) use of existing European component-level technologies and building blocks to strengthen non-dependence and competitiveness; 10) synergies and complementarity with H2020, Horizon Europe and ESA-funded projects; 11) alignment with GCSS co-programmed partnership reporting requirements; 12) contribution to STEP objectives for digital deep-tech space technologies; 13) reduction of EU strategic dependencies; and 14) integration of the gender dimension where relevant.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

Participation is restricted to legal entities established in EU Member States, Norway, Iceland, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland or the UK. Entities controlled by non-eligible countries may only join with country-assessed guarantees safeguarding EU strategic interests. Satellite-based EO/PNT users must rely on Copernicus and/or Galileo/EGNOS. Grants follow the lump sum model under Horizon Europe Simplified Costs rules. Proposals must meet admissibility (page limits, layout) and eligibility (Annexes A, B, C of WP General Annexes) conditions, including a declaration of ownership and control. Awarded projects reporting above evaluation thresholds receive a STEP Seal. Evaluation and award follow criteria in Annex D and processes in Annex F. All activities must comply with the Model Grant Agreement and related guidance. Gender analysis is to be applied if pertinent.
