What is the Doctoral Grant for Teachers, 2nd round 2025 Call?

Grant Description
This grant allows practicing teachers to pursue a PhD project alongside their teaching duties by funding a replacement teacher for part of their workload for up to five years. It aims to apply research knowledge directly to educational practice, raise the quality of education, and strengthen connections between universities and schools.

Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Applicant holds a tenured teaching position at a Dutch government-funded educational institute (primary, secondary, vocational, higher vocational or special education)

• Eligible to research any topic, provided its relevance to educational practice is clearly justified

• Application components: detailed research proposal, applicant CV, supervisor recommendation, and signed employer’s declaration

• Applications may be submitted in Dutch or English via the ISAAC system

• Proposals assessed on three criteria: Quality of the research proposal, Impact, and Quality of the candidate

• Submission deadline for this round: 9 September 2025, 14:00 CEST (second annual round; also January deadline)

• Responsible research data management plan to be prepared after grant award and before project start
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Grant covers only replacement teaching costs for up to 0.4 FTE over five years

• Applicant must maintain regular teaching duties alongside PhD research

• Employer’s declaration is a compulsory application annex

• A science-wide committee ranks proposals; shortlisted candidates attend an interview and present to the selection committee

• Final funding decisions by the Domain Board Social Sciences and Humanities of NWO

• Total programme budget: €5,500,000

• Applications tracked via the online ISAAC portal
