Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• Accurate understanding of the effects of impure (and potentially corrosive) CO₂ flows in transport networks (pipelines, shipping) and storage complexes, including engineered and geological leakage barriers in the near-well zone, in line with Art. 12 of Directive 2009/31/EC

• Improved knowledge of how impurities alter the thermophysical, chemical and corrosive behaviour of CO₂ streams under CCS-relevant conditions

• Public health and safety requirements, material and technological recommendations to ensure integrity of CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure

• Contributions to relevant guidelines and pre-normative research, feeding into standardisation work by CEN, CENELEC, ISO and ETSI on CO₂ transport and permanent storage

• Enhanced uptake of project results through targeted dissemination and support for regulatory and certification bodies
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Projects must choose either the transport or storage application and deliver:
– Design and operation recommendations for pipelines and/or ship offloading: public health and safety requirements; protective/mitigating materials, approaches or monitoring technologies addressing impurity-induced integrity risks
– Safety and integrity recommendations for the storage complex: public health and safety, materials, approaches, monitoring to prevent integrity loss
– Guidance for technology providers, regulatory authorities, certification/standardisation bodies; and execution of ambitious dissemination to support uptake

• Example topics (not exhaustive):
– Transient flow modelling in pipelines under CCS-relevant conditions
– Combined thermodynamic and corrosion modelling to predict corrosion rates with impure CO₂
– Reactive transport and geochemical modelling of near-well zones and geological leakage barriers
– Experimental data generation on geochemical reactions of reservoir rocks, caprocks, well cements, fault seals exposed to impure CO₂ across relevant P–T regimes
– Experimental data on thermophysical and corrosive properties of CO₂-rich mixtures under relevant conditions
– Assessing impurity impacts on equipment (valves, gaskets, compressors, instrumentation), especially non-metallic components
– Impurity effects on physical behaviour and geochemical interactions within the storage complex
– Cost trade-off analysis of achieving very low impurity levels versus capture, transport and storage costs
– Development of systematic methods to set impurity limits and specifications for transport/storage infrastructure

• Encourage synergy with standardisation activities (CEN, CENELEC, ISO, ETSI)

Special Conditions

• Proposals must comply with admissibility: page limits and layout per Horizon Europe General Annexes (Annex A, E) and Application Form Part B

• Only entities from eligible countries (Annex B) may receive funding; some non-associated countries must secure independent funding provisions

• Financial and operational capacity and exclusion criteria as per Annex C

• Lump sum funding rules apply (Decision 7 July 2021); eligible costs defined in Horizon Europe General Annexes (Annex G)

• Evaluation will ensure a balanced portfolio covering both transport and storage applications; each top-ranked in its area may be funded if thresholds met

• Projects must respect Directive 2009/31/EC impurity concentration limits to avoid harmful effects on infrastructure, environment and human health

• Use of ECCSEL research infrastructure is encouraged but not mandatory

• International cooperation is encouraged, notably with US partners; standardisation alignments with EU and international bodies encouraged
