What is the Efficient wireless stationary bidirectional charging solutions for road Light Duty Vehicles (2ZERO Partnership) – Societal Readiness Pilot Call?

Grant Description
This call supports the development and real-world demonstration of bidirectional, interoperable, low-power wireless charging systems and services for road light duty vehicles. It addresses the intrusiveness of charging infrastructure in urban settings and aims to deliver hands-free charging solutions—beneficial for all users including those with disabilities. Projects must achieve at least 90% power transfer efficiency in both directions, robust operation under adverse weather and dirt, enhanced...
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

- Bidirectional, interoperable low-power inductive stationary charging solutions demonstrated in operational environments for Light Duty Vehicles (M1/N1), achieving ≥90% power transfer efficiency in both directions, with increased robustness against humidity, dirt and all weather conditions
• Enhanced electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) within health and safety limits conforming to international standards (SAE J2954, IEC 61980-1/-2/-3, CISPR 11, ISO 19363) and no interference with telecommunication regulations or LF navigation systems
• Increased social acceptance and user comfort of automatic park-and-charge functionalities supported by a complete system-level cost/benefit assessment ensuring acceptable costs
• Demonstration of solutions’ efficient integration into the electricity grid in on-street parking (and optionally in parking lots), incorporating advanced V2X technologies for seamless vehicle-energy system interaction and enhanced solution robustness and efficiency
• Deeper understanding of diverse social groups’ needs and concerns via synthetic population models and tools, boosting potential societal uptake and building trust in project results
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

- Deliver bidirectional, interoperable low-power inductive stationary charging solutions achieving at least 90% power transfer efficiency in both directions and robust operation under humidity, dirt and all weather conditions (rain, snow, ice)
• Ensure electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) within health and safety limits, conforming to SAE J2954, IEC 61980-1/-2/-3, CISPR 11, ISO 19363 and avoiding interference with telecommunication regulations and LF navigation systems (e.g. eLORAN)
• Enhance social acceptance and user comfort of automatic park-and-charge functionalities through user-centric design and a comprehensive system-level cost/benefit assessment ensuring acceptable costs
• Demonstrate efficient integration of solutions into the electricity grid in on-street parking (optionally parking lots), incorporating advanced V2X technologies for seamless vehicle-energy system interaction
• Gain a deeper understanding of needs and concerns of diverse social groups via interdisciplinary methods (e.g. synthetic population models) to foster societal uptake and trust in the technology
• Focus on development of charging system hardware and software integration into vehicles; on-board system optimisations (e.g. BMS, battery) allowed only if directly justified
• Provide real-life operational demonstrations in at least three urban environments across different climates for a minimum of three months
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

- This topic is part of a Societal-Readiness pilot: proposals must apply an interdisciplinary approach, include SSH expertise to support socio-technological interface and design of Societal Readiness activities, and engage societal actors throughout
• Consortia should contribute to existing working groups defining EV wireless charging standards
• Projects must follow Open Science practices and implement FAIR data principles
• Proposals should consider involving the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) for EMC and safety research
• Resulting projects will report to the co-programmed European Partnership ‘Towards zero emission road transport’ (2ZERO) to support KPI monitoring
• Submission is single-stage, Horizon Europe Innovation Action (HORIZON-IA) under a Budget-Based Grant; eligibility, admissibility and evaluation rules per Horizon Europe General Annexes and Programme Guide apply
