What is the ERC ADVANCED GRANTS Call?

Grant Description
Support to established Principal Investigators for ground-breaking, ambitious and feasible frontier research projects of up to five years, including fundamental research, major equipment purchase, access to large facilities and experimental and field work. Expected outputs include high-impact publications, advancement of knowledge frontiers and researcher training.

Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Principal Investigator profile: Established research leader with a recognised track record of significant achievements.

• Research proposal: Must demonstrate ground-breaking nature, high ambition and clear feasibility.

• Eligibility of PI: Any nationality; may reside anywhere at application; research activity must be conducted in an EU Member State or Associated Country.

• Time commitment: Minimum 50% of PI’s working time in an EU Member State or Associated Country; minimum 30% dedicated to the ERC project.

• Host institution: Legal entity established in an EU Member State or Associated Country (or eligible international European research organisation or EU-law entity) that will engage and host the PI for the project duration.

• Project duration and budget:
– Up to 5 years; budget up to EUR 2 500 000 (pro rata reduced if shorter).
– Additional funding up to EUR 1 000 000 (or EUR 2 000 000 if PI moves from a non-associated third country) for one-off start-up, equipment, facilities or field-work costs (not pro rata).

• Submission requirements: Complete, readable and accessible proposals submitted via the Funding & Tenders Portal by 28 August 2025, 17:00 Brussels time, using specified templates and respecting page limits.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Grant awarded as a single lump sum covering all estimated project costs; no detailed cost reporting but cost categories must be justified in the proposal.

• Additional funding for major one-off costs is not subject to pro-rata reduction and must be clearly requested in Section 3 of Part A.

• Admissibility and eligibility criteria strictly applied; non-compliant proposals declared inadmissible or ineligible and rejected.

• Restrictions on re-submission based on prior call outcomes (see ERC Work Programme 2025 for details).

• Exclusion from participation for entities subject to EU Financial Regulation sanctions or listed in EDES.

• Single-stage submission; a two-step peer-review evaluation by high-level panels and external experts.

• Sole evaluation criterion: Scientific excellence (ground-breaking nature, ambition, feasibility of project; intellectual capacity, creativity and commitment of the PI).

• Mandatory open access to all peer-reviewed publications with full re-use rights; research data managed under FAIR principles with a data management plan to be established within six months of grant signature.
