What is the ERC SYNERGY GRANTS Call?
Expected Outcomes
• New lines of enquiry, methods, techniques or unconventional approaches that become global benchmarks.
• Strong interdisciplinary synergy demonstrating integrated expertise across PIs.
• High-impact scientific publications (open access) and datasets (open data).
• Enhanced capacity of European research through recruitment, major equipment acquisition or facility use.
• Establishment of long-lasting collaborations and scientific networks across EU/AC and beyond.
Scope Requirements
• One PI must be designated as the ‘Corresponding Principal Investigator’.
• Each PI must commit at least 30% of their working time to the project and spend at least 50% of their working time in an EU Member State or Associated Country (except one non-EU/AC hosted PI).
• Project duration: up to 6 years (pro rata reduction for shorter durations).
• Funding: base budget up to EUR 10 000 000 plus up to EUR 4 000 000 one-off additional costs (start-up, major equipment, facility access, major fieldwork).
• Research scope: must demonstrate ground-breaking nature, ambition, feasibility and that synergy among PIs enables objectives.
• Proposal structure:
• Part I: 5 pages for scientific synopsis (references excluded) + CV and track record (4 pages per PI).
• Part II: 10 pages for full proposal (references excluded) + unlimited Resources and Time Commitment annex and Budget table per PI.
• Host institution binding statements, ethics self-assessment (if applicable), and administrative forms.
Special Conditions
• Group stability: composition must remain unchanged throughout; any PI departure requires exceptional approval.
• Resubmission restrictions: subject to ERC rules based on prior evaluation outcomes.
• Time commitment: min. 30% PI effort; min. 50% effort in EU/AC.
• Eligible costs: personnel, equipment, facilities, start-up, fieldwork as defined; additional one-off costs not subject to pro rata reduction.
• Evaluation exclusion requests: up to four experts may be excluded at proposal stage.
• Open science: mandatory open access to publications and compliance with ERC data management requirements.
• Ethics and legal: must comply with ethics review, financial capacity checks, security provisions, MGA conditions, EU Financial Regulation, and non-participation restrictions per Annex 3 of ERC Work Programme.
