What is the EU global footprint on soils Call?

Grant Description
This call supports research and innovation actions to develop and pilot an EU Global Soil Footprint framework to measure and reduce the impact of EU demand for bio-based products on soil health globally. Projects should generate robust data and indicators on soil degradation, carbon emissions, ecotoxicity, eutrophication and social impacts linked to EU consumption, deliver policy recommendations aimed at minimising the global soil footprint, and carry out communication, awareness raising and dis...
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• Policymakers and relevant stakeholders gain improved access to knowledge and data on the impact of EU demand for bio-based products on non-EU soils.
• Businesses, stakeholders and citizens achieve enhanced recognition and understanding of how EU production, trade and consumption behaviours affect global soil health and related social issues.
• Accelerated uptake of integrated, innovative and reproducible approaches and management practices that reduce the global soil footprint arising from EU demand for bio-based products.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Enrich the existing EU Consumption Footprint LCA framework with physical, chemical and biological soil health indicators.
• Develop and test an EU Global Soil Footprint framework that measures global soil degradation impacts of EU demand for bio-based products.
• Address links between soil footprint, global trade, GDP and Human Development Index.
• Trace imported bio-based products (for final consumption or as inputs) back to their country of original production, building on JRC land footprint methodology.
• Investigate additional footprints: carbon emissions (carbon footprint), ecotoxicity and eutrophication (contamination footprint), soil biodiversity impacts, and environmental and social inequalities due to land-use change (especially deforestation).
• Take into account soil health indicators from the Mission Soil Implementation Plan and soil descriptors in the proposed Directive on Soil Monitoring and Resilience.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Mandatory multi-actor approach: genuine and sufficient involvement of relevant actors (researchers, land managers, farmers, foresters, advisors, bioeconomy businesses, consumer associations, local communities, educators, civil society, policymakers) throughout the project lifecycle; clear description of how objectives and activities address (end-)user needs and how knowledge exchange and co-creation will generate ready-for-practice results.
• Inclusion of high-quality knowledge exchange activities with precise roles for non-scientific actors and methods to facilitate cross-fertilisation of scientific and practical knowledge.
• Development of practical, freely accessible tools, approaches or products and a clear plan for dissemination through channels most consulted by (end-)users, including EIP-AGRI practice abstracts and engagement with Operational Groups or equivalent networks.
• Dedicated tasks and resources for coordination and collaboration with other Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’ projects, the Mission Secretariat and cluster activities; synergies with EU-CELAC roadmap, SCAR-ARCH, Agricultural Research for Development; encouraged involvement of LAC and African partners; collaboration with international organisations (UNEP, UNCCD bodies, FAO, FARA).
• Demonstrated route to open access, sustainability and interoperability of outputs via the EUSO, LCA group and Soil Wise project.
