What is the EU-Japan cooperation on the exploitation of Quantum Space Gravimetry data Call?

Grant Description
This call supports research and dissemination activities to prepare for the exploitation of quantum space gravimetry mission data. It aims to foster EU–Japan scientific cooperation, develop and tailor processing algorithms, demonstrate the benefits of space-borne gravity field data, involve user institutions early and prepare new applications based on quantum sensing technology.
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Project results are expected to:
• Support EU space policy objectives and the European Green Deal by preparing the technical and scientific groundwork for an innovative Quantum Space Gravimetry mission
• Foster and strengthen EU–Japan cooperation in the field of quantum sensing from space
• Enable scientists from the EU and Japan to develop methods, tools and applications in advance, in order to fully exploit QSG mission data once available
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

Proposals must:
• Identify specific Earth science domains (e.g. hydrology, geodynamics, ice-mass change) of mutual interest for EU and Japan that will benefit from QSG data
• Propose innovative algorithmic or data-processing solutions tailored to quantum gravimetry outputs, clearly demonstrating improved accuracy, resolution or stability over classical approaches
• Provide an assessment of expected QSG mission performance (e.g. sensitivity, spatial/temporal resolution, stability)
• Include research and dissemination actions that engage end-users and data-service institutions at an early stage
• Demonstrate how generated methods and tools will be adopted by the scientific community
• Address integration of the gender dimension (sex and gender analysis) if and where relevant to the scientific objectives
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

- Consortium must include at least one legal entity established in Japan; EU and Horizon Europe Associated Country participants are funded by Horizon Europe, Japanese participants fund their own activities at a comparable level
• Subject to restrictions for the protection of European communication networks
• If using satellite-based Earth observation, positioning, navigation and/or timing data, beneficiaries must use Copernicus and/or Galileo/EGNOS services (other sources may be used in addition)
• Only one proposal will be selected and funded (maximum one grant under this topic)
• Funding is provided as a lump sum under the Horizon Europe Lump Sum Grant model
• Single-stage submission: opening 22 May 2025; deadline 25 September 2025, 17:00 Brussels time
• Applicants must select and incorporate the description and expected impacts of Destination 5 “Open strategic autonomy in developing, deploying and using global space-based infrastructures, services, applications and data” from the Work Programme
