What is the Extended lifetime of road Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) (2ZERO Partnership) Call?

Grant Description
Supports research and innovation actions to holistically analyse ageing and degradation of critical electric drive components of light duty battery electric vehicles, develop predictive tools and lifetime extension concepts, implement circular economy and digital product passport approaches, manage data under FAIR principles, and demonstrate solutions in a representative laboratory environment to extend vehicle lifetime, increase residual value, and reduce resource use and environmental impact.
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Project results are expected to contribute to:

• A holistic, system-level understanding of ageing and degradation in BEV electric drive components facilitating user-centric designs for extended service life and strengthened European resource sovereignty.

• At least a 20 % increase in residual value of BEV electric drive systems compared to state-of-the-art baselines through improved material efficiency and longer component lifetimes.

• Sustainable, economy-design concepts that minimise resource consumption over the product life cycle and support reuse, recycling and end-of-life strategies in advanced technology contexts.

• Development of advanced prospective/prescriptive maintenance and repair schemes that achieve a 20 % reduction in resource use during operation and a 5 % reduction in the overall environmental footprint.

• Demonstrated full-system physical prototypes validating reduced ageing and degradation under representative conditions.

• Enhanced data traceability and sharing via Digital Product Passports and FAIR-compliant data outputs.

• Contributions to the 2 ZERO partnership by reporting on defined KPIs for zero-emission road transport progress.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

Proposals must:

• Focus exclusively on system-level electric drive components of Light Duty BEV (vehicle categories M1 and N1), including thermal management and power electronics, while excluding battery cell technology;

• Analyse functionality, safety and economic impacts of ageing and degradation by correlating real-world operational profiles with observed wear mechanisms;

• Develop tools/methods combining multi-physical models and AI, non-invasive diagnostics, accelerated testing and sensor technologies to assess and predict subsystem ageing;

• Propose and evaluate extended-lifetime design and operation strategies (right-sizing, advanced controls, refurbishment, repair) that maximise residual value without oversizing or excessive raw-material use;

• Embed ageing/degradation models into design and maintenance workflows to enable prescriptive maintenance;

• Implement a Digital Product Passport for traceability of all critical subsystem components;

• Establish a robust data management framework for loads and maintenance aligned with FAIR and Open Science;

• Deliver a lab-scale physical demonstrator validating higher residual-value designs under representative operational conditions;

• Commit to reporting results to the 2 ZERO partnership for KPI tracking.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Funding under Horizon Europe as a lump-sum HORIZON-RIA action governed by the Horizon-AG-LS Model Grant Agreement.

• Eligibility, admissibility, evaluation and award conditions as per Horizon Europe Work Programme General Annexes (Annexes A–G).

• No additional topic-specific eligibility restrictions; battery cell level research is expressly excluded.

• Projects must adhere to Open Science practices and implement FAIR data management for all generated data.

• Mandatory use of the EU Digital Product Passport framework for traceability.

• Required to report progress and results to the ‘Towards zero emission road transport’ (2 ZERO) partnership for KPI monitoring.

• Lump-sum budgeting rules apply; no detailed cost reporting required beyond lump-sum milestones.
