What is the From heat-driven processes to the use of mechanical and electric forces (Processes4Planet partnership) (IA) Call?

Grant Description
This innovation action supports the development and demonstration of new electrically driven industrial processes to replace fossil-fuel heat input in energy-intensive process industries. The goal is to achieve at least 25% energy savings and major greenhouse gas emission reductions by integrating technologies such as membrane separation, power ultrasound, mechanical activation or electrochemical processes. Projects must include a realistic use case, demonstrate energy efficiency and GHG avoidan...
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Energy-intensive industries achieve:
– Integration of renewable electricity by replacing heat-driven units with direct electrically driven process technologies.
– Contribution towards EU climate neutrality and the 2040 target of 90% GHG reduction.
– At least 25% energy savings compared with processes based on Best Available Technologies.
– Improved economic viability of electrified units versus state-of-the-art heat-driven processes, enhancing competitiveness and resilience of the European process industry.
– Demonstrable CO₂ reduction potential, performance, scalability and cost efficiency through at least one realistic industrial use case.
– A clear exploitation pathway supported by a robust business case, feasibility analysis, financial model and identification of funding sources.
– An outlined strategy for societal and environmental benefits and workforce upskilling to support technology deployment.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

Proposals must: 1) Demonstrate and/or integrate at least one highly efficient electrically driven technology (e.g. membrane, ultrasound, mechanical activation, electrochemical) as a direct substitute for traditional heating in process‐industry units; 2) Measure and report energy‐efficiency gains against Best Available Technologies; 3) Prove GHG emission avoidance with a structured methodology (including clear baselines and projected reductions); 4) Adopt a holistic approach covering equipment redesign, advanced materials, integrated electrified processes and digital control; 5) Ensure process safety, sufficient flexibility and ease of operation; 6) Provide at least one realistic, replicable use case with demonstrable economic return, showcasing CO₂ reduction potential, performance, scalability and cost efficiency; 7) Include a business case and credible exploitation strategy for industrialisation (market analysis, TRL‐upgrading plan, investment needs, value‐chain integration, skills requirements and user acceptance); 8) Deliver an exploitation plan with preliminary scaling, commercialisation and deployment pathways (feasibility study, business plan, financial model) and map potential funding sources (Innovation Fund, InvestEU, cohesion policy funds); 9) Outline societal and environmental impacts and implications for workplace skills and organisational change.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

– The scope excludes conventional electric heating and heat pump solutions.
– Projects must implement the co-programmed Processes 4 Planet European partnership.
– Submission under Horizon Europe Innovation Actions; legal entities established in China are not eligible.
– Use of a recognized GHG avoidance methodology (e.g. Innovation Fund methodology) is recommended.
– Proposers must align with the Destination “Achieving global leadership in climate-neutral, circular and digitised industrial and digital value chains” and relevant industry sectors.
– Proposals must follow Horizon Europe admissibility, eligibility and formal requirements (page limits, eligible countries, capacity checks, evaluation procedures as per General Annexes).
