Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Funded research projects are expected to deliver:
• Evidence-based perspectives on alternative spatial and policy pathways for the Dutch large river system;
• Quantitative and qualitative assessments of environmental, socio-economic, and transport impacts of each planning option;
• Integrated models or decision-support tools to inform Ministry policy choices under varying climate scenarios;
• Clear strategies for maximizing river functions synergy and waterborne transport efficiency;
• Defined routes to impact, including stakeholder engagement plans and policy briefs;
• Foundation for long-term adaptive management of the river basin in the face of climate change uncertainties.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

Consortia must consist of a Main Applicant, one or more Co-applicants, optional Co-funders, and Cooperating Partners.
Research must address:
• Spatial planning options for the large river system and their interactions;
• System-scale impacts across the river basin, explicitly including socio-economic effects;
• Effects of climate change (sea-level rise, river water level and quality fluctuations);
• The role and optimization of waterborne transport within the river network;
Proposals must:
• Demonstrate interdisciplinary integration (e.g. earth sciences, social sciences, economics, engineering);
• Define clear problem statements, methodologies, and routes to impact;
• Adhere to budget modules and rates defined in Annex 7.1 of the call;
• Request only essential funding within the total available budget of €2,880,000;
• Be submitted via the ISAAC system by 10 February 2026, 14:00 CET.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

- Main Applicants (or approved substitutes) must register for and attend both collaborative workshops (10 and 25 September 2025);
• Workshop registration and attendance are mandatory preconditions for eligibility;
• Only one project will be funded under this call;
• Applications must include mandatory attachments: budget form, declarations of commitment from partners, co-funding letters (if applicable), continuity guarantee letter (if project supervision is shared), and signed ‘Statement and Signature’ forms;
• Research data management plan to be prepared after grant award;
• All applications subject to admissibility checks and a multi-stage assessment process (including interview);
• Rates and maximum amounts per budget category strictly as per Annex 7.1;
• Presence of DGWB and DGRWS representatives at workshops does not imply project endorsement.
