What is the Generative-AI based Agents to Revolutionize Medical Diagnosis and Treatment of Cancer Call?

Grant Description
This Pathfinder Challenge supports early-stage research to develop and validate generative artificial intelligence-based autonomous agents (and super-agents) that integrate and interpret multidimensional and multimodal medical imaging and health data for eight specified cancer types. It addresses challenges in data scarcity, multimodal integration, and model interpretability. Funded projects will generate synthetic medical data, contribute to a shared database, benchmark and externally validate ...
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• A portfolio of next-generation Gen AI models and autonomous agents for enhanced cancer diagnosis and personalized treatment

• A shared database of synthetic medical images and data for cross-project algorithm development and benchmarking

• Demonstrated improvements in diagnostic accuracy, consistency, and early detection compared with current clinical practice

• Personalized treatment-selection agents capable of forecasting disease progression and treatment efficacy

• Increased transparency and clinician trust through explainable AI frameworks and causal inference methods

• Defined innovative clinical pathways in oncology leveraging autonomous agents

• Standardized evaluation frameworks and methods for AI Act and MDR-compliant generative AI models

• External validation of agents in clinical premises of partner projects

• Enhanced healthcare efficiency, reduced clinician burden, cost reductions and avoidance, and improved patient outcomes

• Strengthened European leadership and competitiveness in AI-driven cancer care through collaborative, interdisciplinary innovation
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Disease focus: choose exactly one of eight cancer types (breast, cervical, ovarian, prostate, lung, brain, stomach, colorectal)

• Address both Area 1 (at least one sub-objective) and Area 2 (at least one sub-objective):
– Area 1: Gen AI for multimodal/multidimensional data integration; medical data augmentation; medical knowledge representation and integration
– Area 2: Predictive diagnosis agent; personalized treatment-selection agent

• Algorithms must combine multiple data modalities and dimensions to produce unified, actionable datasets

• Synthetic data models must generate complementary high-fidelity data to support iterative training

• Knowledge representation prototypes must identify imaging features linked to demographics and conditions

• Agents must provide personalized risk predictions and optimal treatment pathways, with disease progression and efficacy forecasts

• Rigorous evaluation: performance metrics, uncertainty quantification, testing on diverse demographics, proof-of-concept comparisons to current practice

• Enhance interpretability via explainable AI methods

• Compliance with EU Trustworthy AI principles, ethical standards, and the AI Act

• Use of Cancer Image Europe resources and contribution of resulting datasets and tools

• Metadata tagging in EHDS catalogue using Health DCAT-AP standard
