What is the Heritage Media Digital Call?

Grant Description
The Mondriaan Fund’s Heritage Media Digital open call supports museums and publicly accessible heritage institutions in the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, in collaboration with creative makers, to develop and execute innovative digital media storytelling projects based on heritage archives. It aims to boost public engagement with historical stories linked to the national history of the Kingdom of the Netherlands through formats such as podcasts, videos, games, virtual reality...
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• Stimulated public engagement with and awareness of national historical stories through innovative digital formats.

• Creation and delivery of high-quality digital heritage presentations (podcasts, videos, games, VR experiences, websites, etc.) that attract and involve diverse target audiences.

• Development of scalable prototypes and proof-of-concepts that demonstrate feasibility and inspire further investment.

• Generation of audience insights and evidence on resonance via structured development research and interim evaluations, informing adaptive project adjustments.

• Strengthened collaborations between heritage institutions, creative makers and other partners, fostering regional and (inter)national networks.

• Enhanced accessibility and connectedness of digital heritage collections in line with the National Digital Heritage Strategy, contributing to a cohesive digital heritage infrastructure.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Eligible applicants: museums and other publicly accessible, non-profit heritage institutions managing collections, located in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.

• Mandatory collaboration with at least one creative maker.

• Project subject: one or more historical stories about the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

• Two project types: public engagement projects (budget >€10,000; up to 40% of variable costs funded) or development research (up to 70% of variable costs, max €15,000).

• Minimum total project budget: €10,000 (public engagement only).

• Applications submitted via the Mondriaan Fund online system by 12 June or 18 September 2025 (16:00 Dutch time / 10:00 Caribbean time), allowing a 3-month processing period.

• No retrospective funding.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Excluded applicants: art platforms, commercial sales-oriented organizations, institutions for art education and post-academic institutions.

• Ineligible activities: recurring operational expenses, day-to-day operations, publications, documentaries, film or TV productions.

• Dutch applicants using a heritage institution’s digital collection must contact a digital heritage coach and include confirmation email; optional for Caribbean applicants.

• All institutions must comply with the Fair Practice Code, Culture Governance Code and Diversity & Inclusion Code.

• When an artist is involved, fair remuneration at realistic, code-based rates is mandatory and must be budgeted; cannot apply separately for the Artist’s Fee grant.

• Grants are awarded only on positive advisory committee recommendation and final Board approval; budget constraints may require prioritization of positive advisories.

• Applicants must submit required documentation (Chamber of Commerce extract, institutional information, project plan, presentation plan, budget with quotes, letters of support and consent, CVs, optional visual documentation, bank details, and declarations) in prescribed formats and within page limits.
