Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• Enhanced availability of data, models and methodologies to measure, monitor, assess and valorise grassland multifunctionality, benefiting all grassland management actors.

• Increased availability, accessibility and uptake by farmers of sustainable grassland management knowledge, innovative solutions, practices and strategies.

• Strengthened networking, participatory approaches and knowledge mobilisation among stakeholders for sustainable grassland management.

• Provision of scientific support and policy recommendations for the development, implementation and evaluation of EU policies relevant to grasslands (CAP, EU climate policy, Nature Restoration Regulation).

• Empowerment of farmers and agricultural actors to manage sustainable, efficient, profitable, circular, low-GHG grassland systems contributing to climate neutrality and resilience.

• Informed decision support tools at farm and landscape levels improving ecosystem service delivery, productivity and socio-economic outcomes.

• Identification of effective financing and incentive mechanisms for sustainable grassland management and habitat restoration.

• Consolidation of social innovation and citizen engagement to ensure societal relevance and long-term impact of grassland management solutions.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Focus on grazing livestock systems involving both permanent grasslands (per Reg. EU 2021/2115) and temporary grasslands (included in rotation before five years).

• Address a variety of farming systems and approaches, including at least one organic farming system.

• Cover multiple biogeographical regions and pedo-climatic conditions across EU and Associated Countries, including marginal areas at risk of abandonment and zones trending towards arable intensification.

• Enable performance comparisons between grassland systems with mixed species (including legumes) versus mono-species swards, and between different levels of grass-based ruminant farming.

• Include a dedicated work package/task for collaboration with other projects funded under the same topic.

• Leverage JRC and Eurostat spatial datasets; consider Earth Observation data services (Copernicus, Galileo/EGNOS).

• Demonstrate complementarity with other Horizon Europe initiatives, Partnerships (Agroecology, Farm2Fork, Climate, etc.) and relevant R&I projects.

• Integrate social sciences and humanities (SSH), social innovation and citizen engagement to boost societal and long-term impact.

• Opening date: 06 May 2025; Deadline: 16 September 2025, 17:00 Brussels time.

• Eligibility and participation rules per Horizon Europe General Annexes (Annex B for countries, Annex C for capacity, multi-actor approach mandatory).

• Proposals must adhere to page limits and layout in Annex A/E of Work Programme General Annexes and Application Form Part B.

• If using satellite data, beneficiaries must use Copernicus and/or Galileo/EGNOS services.

• The Joint Research Centre (JRC) may participate as a consortium member.

• Use of Earth Observation encouraged where relevant.

• Alignment and complementarity with specified topics in the call and Horizon Europe Partnerships are required.

• International cooperation is encouraged.
