What is the Individual Acquisitions Grant Call?

Grant Description
The Individual Acquisitions Grant supports Dutch museums and cultural heritage institutions, alone or in collaboration, to acquire significant items or partial collections that enrich the Dutch National Cultural Heritage Collection and will be displayed permanently or semi-permanently, aiming to increase the collection’s quality, profile and public accessibility.
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• Enhanced quality and profile of the Dutch National Cultural Heritage Collection through the addition of significant new items.

• Permanent or semi-permanent public display of newly acquired heritage objects, increasing public access and engagement.

• Strengthened institutional capacity: improved presentation and communication plans to attract and retain target audiences.

• Robust provenance research, valuation, and condition reporting integrated into acquisition practice.

• Promotion of collaboration between heritage institutions to generate added value.

• Long-term preservation and stewardship of acquisitions under professional standards.

• Development of transparent, well-documented acquisition processes, including fair market valuations and negotiated purchase prices.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Applicant: publicly accessible Dutch institutions in charge of museum collections of national/international significance (registered in the museum register). Privately owned museums may only apply if their articles of association vest ownership in the public collection on bankruptcy.

• Acquisition value: estimated value must exceed €50,000 and acquisitions on the former CHPA list valued over €1,000,000 are ineligible (applicants directed to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science).

• Financial: maximum 40% grant of estimated value; significant co-financing by the applicant is required. Grants over €500,000 are rarely awarded—applicants requiring large grants should consult the Fund in advance.

• Application: complete online form with necessary annexes (see checklist). Allow up to three months processing from a complete application; no retroactive awards. Urgent acquisitions may be considered with prior consultation.

• Documentation: up-to-date Chamber of Commerce registration; organisational profile; valuation and condition reports; provenance research (with WWII focus if applicable); detailed explanation of price determination and negotiation; recent collection plan; presentation and communication plan; detailed budget and financing plan; visual documentation. Any third-party contributions declared.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Ineligible uses: construction works; preservation of listed buildings; archaeological excavations; passive conservation; documentation of collections.

• Regular budget: acquisitions reasonably fundable from the institution’s regular budget are ineligible. Institutions with a Collection Programme Grant must justify why that budget cannot be used.

• Loan and reciprocity: applicant must loan the acquisition to other Dutch institutions free of charge (reciprocity principle) and minimize direct costs (transport, insurance, packaging).

• Ownership and long-term preservation: the acquired item must remain part of the Dutch National Cultural Heritage Collection indefinitely; any transfer of ownership requires Mondriaan Fund approval. The applicant must ensure proper housing, climate control, and security.

• Auction house conflict: if the Fund appoints an auction-house representative to the advisory committee, the museum may not then request an appraisal from that same house.

• Display: the acquisition must be made available to the public immediately or as soon as possible.
