Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

1. Patients have access to tailored, affordable, effective and—when appropriate—minimally-invasive surgery-centred, multi-modal treatment interventions targeting locally advanced or metastatic disease.
2. Researchers, innovators, SMEs and other professionals across disciplines and sectors gain access to innovative surgery-centred treatment technologies and medical devices for further improvement and validation.
3. National healthcare providers, policymakers and authorities in European regions, Member States and Associated Countries obtain the evidence needed to implement affordable surgery-centred treatment solutions that benefit cancer patients with locally advanced or metastatic disease in their health systems.

Scope Requirements

Target cancer patients with locally advanced or metastatic disease; validate surgery-centred multi-modal treatment interventions through academic investigator-initiated clinical trials; where appropriate, incorporate minimally-invasive surgical techniques combined with medical devices or other complementary interventions; adapt interventions to the needs of the target population and the specificities of local, regional or national healthcare systems, reflecting cultural diversity and resource availability; disaggregate data by sex, gender, age, socio-economic status, ethnicity and other relevant variables; define primary and secondary endpoints supporting overall survival, patient-reported outcomes and quality of life, co-defined with patients and caregivers using participative research models; demonstrate affordability via cost-effectiveness analysis; involve a diverse mix of stakeholders across disciplines and sectors; ensure data and tools adhere to European Health Data Space metadata standards, open science principles and availability on UNCAN.eu; include effective contribution from Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

Proposals must build on and reference resources from the Knowledge Centre on Cancer (JRC); successful applicants will be required to join the Cancer Mission 'Diagnosis and Treatment' cluster and allocate budget for networking, attendance at cluster meetings and joint activities; translational research is strictly limited to supporting the conduct and analysis of the proposed clinical trials; all project datasets must be described in the EU dataset catalogue of the European Health Data Space and all tools/models made available via the future UNCAN.eu platform; mandatory involvement of Social Sciences and Humanities experts and institutions; clinical study details must be provided in a dedicated annex using the template in the submission system; grant is budget-based, single-stage, with a 16 Sept 2025, 17:00 Brussels time deadline.
