What is the Integration of human driving behaviour in the validation of CCAM systems (CCAM Partnership) Call?

Grant Description
This call supports research to develop, extend and validate human driving behaviour models for safety-critical scenarios in mixed traffic. It addresses the need for connected, cooperative and automated mobility systems to exhibit human-like and safe driving that is predictable and acceptable to all road users. Expected outputs include parameterised models representing a variety of driving conditions and demographics, shared in a common repository, integrated into virtual safety validation framew...
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Funded projects will deliver: validated, human-behavioural driver models representing the full variety and statistical distribution of human driving in safety-relevant scenarios; a common model repository accessible via the federated CCAM data exchange platform; defined pass/assessment criteria for CCAM type-approval, consumer testing and industrial development; methodologies to design safe, predictable, human-like CCAM system behaviours that are acceptable to all road users; demonstration of model application in mixed-traffic closed-loop virtual safety validation, realistically simulating human-driven vehicle reactions; and integration evidence of models within HEADSTART, SUNRISE and SYNERGIES virtual validation frameworks—all raising technology readiness to TRL 5 and supporting accelerated, safe deployment of CCAM systems.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Build upon i4Driving and BERTHA outputs to cover a multitude of safety-critical driving scenarios, including emergency and complex real-world situations

• Account for the variation and statistical distribution of human driving behaviours, including non-driving tasks

• Calibrate and parameterise models to reflect road infrastructure, vehicle types, traffic rules, national/regional differences and driver demographics (age, gender, experience, cultural factors)

• Validate models well beyond current scenario sets and degrees of validation to reach TRL 5

• Capture parameterisation and validation data via driving simulators and/or instrumented real-traffic monitoring

• Integrate models into virtual validation and verification approaches from HEADSTART, SUNRISE and SYNERGIES projects

• Demonstrate successful integration in safety-relevant mixed-traffic scenario simulations provided by HORIZON-CL 5-2023-D 6-01-02

• Share final models through the federated CCAM data exchange platform (HORIZON-CL 5-2025-D 6-06)

• Incorporate SSH expertise for behavioural insights and model enrichment

• Encourage and structure international cooperation with Japan, the United States and other third-country partners, ensuring regional/cultural adaptation of models
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• This topic implements the co-programmed European Partnership on ‘Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility’ (CCAM); funded projects must report on Partnership KPIs

• Mandatory use of the European Common Evaluation Methodology (EU-CEM) for CCAM in project reporting and evaluation

• Models must be shared via the future federated CCAM data exchange platform developed under HORIZON-CL 5-2025-D 6-06

• Projects are required to engage with the JRC’s Sustainable, Smart, and Safe Mobility Unit and establish formal collaboration where appropriate

• International cooperation is encouraged but must account for and document regional, cultural and infrastructure-specific differences in data capture and model application

• Grants awarded under the HORIZON Lump Sum Grant (HORIZON-AG-LS) MGA with single-stage submission
