What is the ISOS Pilot Mission Detailed Design – HOST component Call?

Grant Description
This research and innovation action supports the detailed design of the platform component (named HOST) for an In-Space Operations and Services pilot mission. It addresses the challenge of creating a sustainable, flexible, automated and economically viable space infrastructure by 2030, with plug-and-play spacecraft modules, robotic manipulation and refuelling capabilities, to seed a future circular in-space economy, enhance EU autonomy, resilience of space assets and foster a new in-space econom...
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

- A sustainable, highly automated, flexible and economically viable space infrastructure incorporating circular economy principles (e.g., plug-and-play recycling/reuse of spacecraft modules)
• Completion of detailed mission and system design for HOST, and maturation of enabling technologies and innovative operational concepts
• Defined interfaces between HOST, servicing, logistics and sat APPs components, aligned with the ISOS Pilot Mission Coordination and Support Action
• Contribution to the ISOS Pilot Mission Objectives as detailed in the technical annex
• Clearly articulated use cases and business models addressing governmental and/or commercial needs
• Enhanced in-orbit demonstration (IOD/V) opportunities through promoted plug-and-play experiment capabilities on HOST
• Availability of results to inform and enable subsequent mission phases
• Medium- to long-term development and deployment of global space-based services, reinforcing EU’s freedom of action, resilience and protection of space assets, fostering a new in-space economy and boosting European space sector competitiveness
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

Proposals must:
• Complete the ISOS Pilot mission detailed mission and system design for HOST and mature key technologies to the required TRL by project end
• Develop and validate scalable, modular HOST architecture with robotic manipulation, sat APPs plug-and-play functionality and refuelling capability for both HOST and co-hosted servicer/logistic spacecraft
• Contribute actively to the overall ISOS pilot mission design in close cooperation with other mission component projects, the ISOS Pilot Mission Coordination and Support Action and the PMAG
• Research and simulate HOST functions and operational concepts leveraging distributed computing, multi-agent and networked systems
• Present a concrete technology maturation plan to reach required TRLs
• Demonstrate complementarities with previous/ongoing EU and ESA R&I (e.g., Future Space Ecosystem topics, Horizon 2020/Europe projects)
• Leverage existing European technologies and building blocks to ensure non-dependence and competitiveness
• Ensure balanced participation of Member States and eligible Associated Countries’ expertise to support EU strategic ‘Act in Space’ capacity
• Address gender dimension integration in R&I content, if relevant
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

- Participation restricted to legal entities established in EU Member States, Norway or Iceland; entities controlled by non-eligible countries may participate only with specific guarantees on control, security and IP retention
• Projects using satellite-based EO, positioning or timing services must use Copernicus and/or Galileo/EGNOS
• Maximum one project funded under this topic
• Proposals limited to 60 pages; must include a single consolidated ownership and control declaration questionnaire
• Mandatory collaboration with projects selected under topics SPACE-21, SPACE-23, SPACE-24 and the ISOS Pilot Mission Coordination and Support Action, formalised via a collaboration agreement
