What is the KIC Data sharing for the energy transition: socio-technical challenges Call?

Grant Description
This call supports public-private consortia to generate socio-technical knowledge that removes barriers to data sharing in the energy transition. It addresses the need for high quality, privacy-aware data exchange to manage decentralised generation, peak demand and grid congestion. Projects will deliver insights into technology, behaviour, policy and business strategies to create structured, accessible and fair data sharing processes.
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• Identification and removal of key socio-technical barriers to data sharing in the energy sector, enhancing the speed and fairness of data exchange

• New socio-technical frameworks, policies and tools that ensure high data quality, privacy protection and equitable access for all stakeholders

• Demonstrators or pilot implementations showing how shared data can mitigate peak electricity demand and alleviate grid congestion

• Strengthened collaboration between academia, industry and public stakeholders, leading to faster deployment of innovative data-driven energy solutions

• Clear routes to impact: published guidelines, open-source prototypes, stakeholder training materials and policy briefs that drive measurable improvements in energy system efficiency and resilience
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Consortium composition: one main applicant, ≥1 co-applicant, ≥2 co-funders (public or private), optional cooperation partners

• Applicant disciplines: interdisciplinary coverage in fields such as data science, computer science, environmental science, business administration, public administration, law, sociology and related areas

• Budget: NWO funding €1,000,000–€2,200,000 per project, covering 50–70% of total project costs; remaining budget from committed co-funding

• Project duration: up to 6 years

• Language: proposals in English

• Submission system: proposals via ISAAC using NWO-provided forms and templates (including budget with most recent rates)

• Compliance: must adhere to DORA guidelines and NWO’s data management and co-funding requirements

• Deadlines: research idea by 2 Sep 2025 (for matchmaking), matchmaking event 24 Sep 2025 (optional), full proposal by 18 Nov 2025, 14:00 CEST
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Co-funding is mandatory and must be irrevocably committed via signed declarations before the deadline; NWO will not fund less than 50% nor more than 70% of total costs

• Consortium members must actively contribute to research question formulation and project implementation

• Project duration must not exceed six years; failure to comply invalidates the proposal

• Optional but strongly recommended participation in the matchmaking event (24 Sep 2025) to facilitate consortium building; research ideas submitted after 2 Sep 2025 14:00 CEST will be excluded from matchmaking

• Required annexes: declaration of co-funding (for each co-funder), statements and signature form, co-applicant appointment statements (if non-permanent staff), declaration of research organisation (for foreign partners), and any other forms specified in the NWO call document

• All proposals must include a commitment to prepare a data management plan post-award, in accordance with NWO’s research data management policy
