What is the KIEM Defensie Call?
Expected Outcomes
• Strengthened, sustainable collaborations between Defence stakeholders, universities of applied sciences, and industry partners.
• Development of new methods, tools or technologies that can be further scaled or integrated into Defence operations.
• Capacity building within universities of applied sciences for conducting Defence-relevant applied research.
• Foundation for follow-on research or larger-scale projects supported by Defence or other funding bodies.
• Enhanced knowledge exchange and dissemination through workshops, training sessions, and publications tailored to Defence audiences.
Scope Requirements
• Projects must be practice-oriented and/or exploratory, directly tied to a Defence unit’s operational or strategic needs.
• Funding per project is capped at €40,000; total budget for the round is €1,000,000 with up to 25 awards.
• Interdisciplinary approaches are required; applicants should involve researchers from multiple disciplines listed (eg, engineering, ICT, social sciences, life sciences, etc).
• Collaboration with Defence end-users, industry partners or other social stakeholders is mandatory.
• Proposals must align with the KIEM Defensie 2025-2026 research programme.
• Projects should be led by starting or established researchers; inclusion of early-career staff is encouraged.
• Full applications must be submitted via the Regieorgaan SIA portal by 30 September 2025, 14:00 hrs.
Special Conditions
• Projects must commence and conclude within the timelines defined by the KIEM Defensie 2025-2026 programme.
• Costs must adhere to the SIA/JPI Defence budget regulations; overhead and indirect costs may be limited.
• The grant ceiling of €1,000,000 is fixed; once allocated, no further awards will be made.
• Reporting requirements include interim progress updates to both the Defence unit sponsor and SIA, plus a final report with deliverables and impact assessment.
• Intellectual property arising from the research must be managed under the collaborative framework agreed with Defence units.
