What is the New CO2 capture technologies Call?

Grant Description
This call aims to develop and demonstrate new or emerging carbon dioxide capture technologies from point sources or directly from air to achieve significant cost reductions, minimize environmental and health impacts, and deliver high-purity CO₂ suitable for transport and storage, while ensuring scalability, operational flexibility, material longevity, and energy efficiency.
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• New CO₂ capture technologies (point-source or DAC) that significantly reduce the overall cost of capture.

• Technologies with the lowest possible negative environmental impacts, including reduced water usage.

• Delivery of CO₂ meeting transport and storage specifications with minimal impurities.

• Scalable, modular capture solutions suitable for retrofit to existing industrial processes, maintaining high capture rates under variable operating conditions.

• Demonstrated pathways for future industrial deployment with minimal health and environmental risks.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Target either point-source capture or Direct Air Capture (DAC) and explicitly state which route is addressed.

• For selected capture routes (solvents, sorbents, membranes, cryogenic, solid looping), address: enhanced absorption/adsorption; improved kinetics; reduced energy use for capture/desorption; development of materials with high CO₂ selectivity; operational flexibility; modularisation and scale-up; footprint minimisation; material degradation and lifespan; retrofit capability; heat integration potential; and solvent-induced corrosion resistance.

• For DAC route specifically: propose novel sorbent or solvent materials offering higher CO₂ capacity and long-term stability under heat and air exposure.

• Demonstrate minimisation of health and environmental impacts (including water use) with a view to future industrial scale-up.

• Ensure the technology delivers CO₂ at specifications required for transport and storage, with very low impurity levels.

• For point-source capture: demonstrate performance under variable operating conditions (e.g., load changes) to maintain high capture rates across the full operating profile; show a good match between the capture technology and a specific industrial application without compromising process continuity or product quality.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Use of the European Research Infrastructure for CO₂ Capture, Utilisation, Transport and Storage (ECCSEL) is encouraged but not mandatory.

• For DAC proposals, international cooperation with participating countries of the Mission Innovation Carbon Dioxide Removal Mission is encouraged.

• Funding instrument: Horizon Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) under the lump sum grant model.

• Single-stage submission; deadline 17 February 2026, 17:00 Brussels time.

• Eligible projects must align with the specified budget and grant size (indicatively up to EUR 8 million budget for this topic, supporting around 4 grants).
