What is the Nutrients produced by microorganisms utilising primarily CO2 from the air, with the support of biotechnology Call?

Grant Description
The call supports innovation actions to develop and scale precision fermentation processes using genetically engineered microorganisms to capture carbon dioxide and produce nutrients for food. It addresses safer, resource-efficient biotechnologies, fosters new start-ups and business models, strengthens EU strategic autonomy, and improves pilot plant scale-up.
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• Demonstrated application of precision fermentation via genetically engineered microorganisms to enhance food safety and system resilience.

• Promotion of innovation through the creation and growth of start-ups in biotechnology-based food production.

• Strengthened EU strategic autonomy and leadership in novel nutrient production processes and business models for industrial plants and SMEs.

• Delivery of cost- and resource-efficiency improvements in bioreactor design and upstream/downstream processing by industry and related actors (associations, consultants, engineering experts).

• Improved understanding of environmental and climate impacts associated with CO₂ reduction in the air.

• Support from food producers for establishing living laboratories, pre-commercialisation infrastructure or shared facilities for biotechnological testing.

• Identification and scale-up by SMEs and start-ups of innovative technologies using genetically engineered microorganisms to convert CO₂ into food nutrients.

• Enhancement of existing European pilot plants by removing scaling-up barriers for nutrient and ingredient production.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Proposals must address all listed activities in the call’s scope without exception.

• Implement a multi-actor approach, ensuring active participation of private companies, especially SMEs and start-ups, from across the value chain.

• Include a dedicated work-plan task and allocate resources for collaboration with projects already funded under this topic.

• Establish links with Regional Innovation Valleys for the bioeconomy and food systems (RIV 4 BFS) to facilitate regional deployment of bioprocess technologies.

• Where feasible, integrate with data spaces—particularly the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC)—to leverage data synergies.

• Consider and, where relevant, utilise services from European research infrastructures (e.g., IBISBA, ESFRI portfolio) and existing technology infrastructures.

• Encourage international collaboration, notably with partners in the United States.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Mandatory implementation of the multi-actor approach (see Work Programme definition).

• Adequate involvement of existing private companies in Europe, with a focus on SMEs and start-ups.

• Dedicated collaboration task in the workplan with peer projects funded under this topic.

• Requirement to link with RIV 4 BFS and promote quadruple-helix actor cooperation.

• Strong recommendation for cross-articulation with EOSC and other data spaces.

• Encouragement to access services of IBISBA, ESFRI and other technology infrastructures.

• International cooperation is encouraged, particularly with U.S. partners.
