What is the NWA Loneliness Call?

Grant Description
Supports interdisciplinary consortia research to improve understanding of the forms and causes of loneliness in diverse societal groups, develop and evaluate effective interventions, address the social taboo around loneliness, translate knowledge into professional and volunteer practice, and inform policy development.

Expected Outcomes

• In‐depth understanding of the types, drivers, and social dynamics of loneliness across demographic and cultural groups.

• Evidence-based, scalable interventions and best practices to prevent and reduce loneliness.

• Insights into societal taboos and stigma surrounding loneliness, and strategies to address them.

• Enhanced capacity, skills, and expertise among professionals, volunteers, and policymakers to recognize and tackle loneliness.

• Effective translation of research findings into real‐world practice and policy recommendations.

• Strengthened collaboration frameworks between academia, civil society, and public stakeholders for sustained action on loneliness.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Consortium composition: minimum one Main Applicant, one Co-applicant, and one Cooperating Partner; participation of societal partners is mandatory; optional Co-funder(s).

• Disciplines: open to social sciences, humanities, life sciences and medicine, applied sciences; interdisciplinary collaboration required.

• Budget Phase I: €800 000–€970 000 per project; max duration 54 months.

• Budget Phase II: €700 000–€835 000; max duration 48 months; open only to consortia funded in Phase I.

• Submission: use ISAAC system, with prescribed application, budget, and support forms; account must be created ≥1 workday before deadline.

• Deadlines: Phase I full proposals by 29 June 2023, 14:00 CEST; Phase II revised proposals by 14 October 2025, 14:00 CEST.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Societal partners must be active consortium members, not mere advisors.

• Only Phase I grantees may apply in Phase II.

• No external referees: proposals assessed by an NWO Assessment Committee, including an interview stage.

• Four assessment criteria with phase-specific subcriteria and weightings: 1) Problem definition & analysis (20 %), 2) Impact & route to impact (20 %), 3) Consortium quality (30 %), 4) Research quality (30 %).

• Responsible research data management: data management plan mandatory pre-start.

• Compliance with NWO’s fixed procedures, budget modules (see section 3.2), and programme regulations.

• Must adhere to Dutch Research Agenda thematic priorities on loneliness.
