Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Funded projects will deliver robust, user-driven digital infrastructures that:

• Enable open access to and sharing of diverse research outputs (data, software, publications, hardware, creative works, replication studies).

• Embed and support open science workflows and practices (e.g. reproducibility, preregistration, open peer review, citizen science, societal engagement).

• Demonstrate clear plans for long-term sustainability, including governance, funding models and software maintenance.

• Are interoperable, FAIR-compliant and adhere to community standards.

• Foster cross-institutional and/or cross-domain collaboration to maximize impact and reusability of the developed infrastructure.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Focus must align with the entire spectrum of open science, but may target a subset: specific infrastructure types, research output types or open science practices.

• Proposals may be domain-agnostic or restricted to one or more research domains.

• Two application types:
– Type 1 (Small): up to €250 000, max 2‐year duration, for improvements/extensions of existing infrastructure or pilots for new.
– Type 2 (Large): €250 000–€1 500 000, max 4‐year duration, for improvements/extensions of existing infrastructure.

• Detailed budget justification per cost category (see section 7.1 of the call).

• Applicants must use the official ISAAC forms (pre-proposal and full proposal forms, budget form, optional software management plan template, optional continuity guarantee).
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Eligible applicants: main and co-applicants must hold a permanent or temporary contract (covering project duration) at a qualifying Dutch research organisation (universities, UMCs, KNAW/NWO institutes, specified national centres, SURF, NLeSC, The National Library, Universities of Applied Sciences as per WHW art. 1.8). Zero-hour contracts are excluded.

• Participant roles: main applicant, co-applicant(s), cooperation partner(s) (optional).

• In Type 1 applications co-applicants are optional; in Type 2 at least one co-applicant from a second eligible institution is mandatory.

• A main applicant may submit at most one Type 1 and one Type 2 proposal (max two total).

• Co-funding is not permitted.

• Applications must be submitted via the ISAAC system by the deadlines: pre-proposal by 5 Nov 2024, full proposal by 22 Apr 2025 (both 14:00 local time).
