What is the Post-exascale HPC (CSA) Call?
Expected Outcomes
• Delivery of a high-quality, maintained roadmap addressing post-exascale HPC/AI research challenges for applications, algorithms, software, hardware and systems, with strong emphasis on AI
• Contribution to the development of a competitive, converged European HPC/Quantum/AI ecosystem, including the advancement of AI Factories and future AI Gigafactories
• Enhanced interaction and collaboration with international post-exascale efforts, ensuring global alignment with emerging AI-driven computing paradigms worldwide
• A coordinated stakeholder community well positioned to implement the roadmap’s research recommendations at EU level
Scope Requirements
• Guide and prepare the European HPC ecosystem for the post-exascale era at the convergence of supercomputing, quantum computing and AI
• Bring together all key scientific and industrial players in Europe, with demonstrable strong AI engagement
• Liaise closely with:
– International post-exascale efforts (e.g. InPex)
– EuroHPC JU advisory bodies (RIAG, INFRAG)
– EuroHPC JU private partners (ETP4HPC, BDVA, QuIC)
– Core EuroHPC initiatives (DARE, HPC CoEs, AI Factories, etc.)
– Hosting entities of European AI Factories and future AI Gigafactories
• Analyse research challenges across: hardware-supported mixed precision, AI-driven HPC as a service, real-time HPC, next-generation AI model training and inference, digital continuum, convergence of HPC/AI/Quantum/Cloud/Edge
• Produce and maintain a high-quality research roadmap with concrete recommendations for European research actions
• Plan for a project duration of 24–36 months (other durations permissible)
• Develop synergies with relevant Digital Europe Programme (DEP) projects
• (Optional) Integrate gender dimension (sex/gender analysis) if deemed relevant by proposers
Special Conditions
• Project duration typically 24–36 months (flexible)
• Gender dimension integration is not mandatory, but strongly encouraged if relevant
• Projects must develop clear synergies with Digital Europe Programme (DEP) projects
• Budget request must be between EUR 1.8 M and EUR 2.5 M
• Standard Horizon Europe admissibility, eligibility, financial and operational capacity, exclusion, evaluation and award criteria, and legal/financial setups apply (see General Annexes A–G and specific topic conditions)
• Participants must comply with country eligibility rules and any restrictions for protection of European communication networks
