What is the Raising citizen awareness on alternative proteins derived from biotechnology Call?

Grant Description
This coordination and support action will raise public understanding and awareness of biotechnology‐derived alternative proteins by counteracting misinformation; develop science‐based communication and educational interventions; survey citizen dietary patterns; produce technical and dissemination materials; recommend curriculum updates; and engage stakeholders across sectors to empower informed dietary choices and highlight sustainability and health impacts.
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Project results are expected to deliver:
• Empowered citizens able to make informed dietary decisions regarding alternative protein sources derived from biotechnology, with increased awareness of associated sustainability and health impacts.
• Strengthened education, communication awareness and public access to reliable information on alternative proteins and biotech applications in the food sector.
• Improved scientific knowledge at national, regional and local levels on diverse biotechnology applications for food and food ingredients.
• Enhanced communication and understanding of the social, economic and environmental impacts of biotechnologically derived alternative protein sources.
• Raised citizens’ awareness of characteristics and benefits of biotechnological proteins (e.g., precision fermentation) through targeted communication tools.
• Identification of policy inconsistencies or regulatory barriers (e.g., public funds supporting unsustainable or unhealthy food production) that negatively affect market uptake and public interest.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

Proposals must:
• Counteract misinformation and improve public understanding of alternative proteins derived from biotechnology, supporting educational interventions and information dissemination on dietary transition to these proteins.
• Identify new biotechnological food products with market opportunities, map their production potential and define necessary accompanying measures (e.g., hygienic standards, dissemination campaigns) to ensure consumer acceptance.
• Ensure produced data is FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Re-usable) and involves effective Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) contributions.
• Implement the multi-actor approach throughout project development and implementation, ensuring adequate involvement of citizens, civil society organisations, public authorities, private institutes, value-chain actors and other relevant stakeholders.
• Leverage preliminary results from the HORIZON-funded B-Trust project and connect to European research infrastructures (e.g., EU-IBISBA) in biotechnology.
