What is the Replication Studies Call?

Grant Description
This programme funds researchers at Dutch knowledge institutions to replicate cornerstone research across all disciplines, aiming to strengthen research transparency, methodological rigor and to gain insights into effective inclusion of replication studies in funding programmes. Funded outputs include re-analyses and exact or less exact replications of prior studies, dissemination of results and reflection on methodology requirements.

Expected Outcomes

• Empirical validation or challenge of cornerstone findings to strengthen the reliability of the scientific record

• Development of best practices for conducting and funding replication research in the Netherlands

• Insights into effective methodological and transparency requirements for future funding calls

• Increased awareness and capacity for Open Science and robust research methods among Dutch researchers

• Dissemination of replication protocols, data, and results to the broader community to promote transparency and reuse

• Recommendations for integrating replication research systematically into mainstream funding programmes
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Applicant affiliation to a Dutch knowledge institution for the project duration

• Demonstrable methodological competence to conduct or supervise replication research

• Proven expertise in the subject area of the original study

• Project team composition must cover all relevant expertise

• Only three types of replication: 1) reproduction with existing data, 2) exact replication with new data, 3) less exact replication with new data and adjusted design

• Projects involving new data with a different design are excluded

• Maximum budget: €100,000 for Type 1 projects; €200,000 for Type 2 and 3 projects

• Budget may cover personnel and material costs freely

• Maximum project duration: 3 years

• Application in English, max 3,500 words for the proposal description

• Required sections: motivation, method, registration & data management, dissemination & impact, team, timeline, budget

• Submission via ISAAC system by 6 March 2025, 14:00 CET using provided forms
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Independence from original study authors; any collaboration must be declared via provided template

• Mandatory use of NWO/ZonMw templates: application form, budget form, and, if applicable, declarations for co‐funding, appointment, material sharing, cooperation with original researchers

• No additional annexes permitted

• Responsible Research Data Management: data management plan to be prepared after grant award and before project start

• Assessment phases include admissibility check, interview selection (alignment & independence), full review, possible budget‐based triage, interviews, and final decision by Open Science NL

• If total requests exceed twice available budget, proposals are further prioritized on key criteria before interviews
