What is the Research on open science Call?

Grant Description
This call aims to strengthen the evidence base for open science by funding research projects that investigate open science practices, address at least two priority topics, and embed open science principles. Projects up to two years in duration will be supported to generate new knowledge, recommendations for policy and practice, and contributions to open scholarship.
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• New empirical and theoretical insights into Open Science practices and principles.

• Contributions to the evidence base on one or more priority topics, strengthening the scientific understanding of citizen science, FAIR data, open software, and open publication.

• Demonstrable embedding of Open Science principles within project design, data management, software development, and dissemination.

• Clear vision and concrete plan for achieving scientific, societal, and policy impact, including recommendations for stakeholders and pathways to implementation.

• Openly available outputs (data, software, publications) that adhere to FAIR and open standards, fostering reuse and further research.

Scope Requirements

• Applicants must hold a permanent or temporary position (not zero-hour or honorary) at one of the following: Dutch universities or universities of applied sciences, university medical centres, KNAW or NWO institutes, Netherlands Cancer Institute, Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Naturalis, ARCNL, or Princess Máxima Center.

• Each applicant (main or co-applicant) may submit only one proposal.

• Projects must align with the goal of stimulating research on Open Science and address at least two priority topics: 1) citizen science & societal engagement; 2) FAIR data; 3) open research software; 4) open scholarly publication.

• Grant request up to €250,000 per project, maximum duration 2 years.

• Budgets must be justified and may only include personnel and material costs.

• Applications submitted through the ISAAC system by 16 September 2025, 14:00 CEST.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Zero-hour employment or honorary appointments are ineligible.

• Applicants must use and upload prescribed ISAAC forms: proposal form, budget form, and signed guarantee of continuity project.

• ISAAC account must be created ≥1 working day before submission.

• Pre-adviser consultation (Sept/Oct 2025), rebuttal window (Jan/Feb 2026), and committee meeting (March 2026) precede final decision by the Open Science NL Steering Board.

• Only costs for personnel and materials as defined by NWO rules are eligible.
