• Boost applicants’ artistic or curatorial development by offering focused time, space and resources to experiment and produce new work.
• Facilitate the expansion of professional networks and entry into new national and international markets.
• Strengthen cultural entrepreneurship by enhancing applicants’ visibility, audience engagement and collaboration skills.
• Result in creative outputs that make a valuable contribution to contemporary visual art and/or cultural heritage in the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
• Encourage dissemination of work or projects through exhibitions, open studios, workshops, blogs, publications or other tailored public presentations during or after the residency.

Scope Requirements

Eligible applicants must be visual artists, curators, art critics or art observers who:
• Have at least one year of professional practice:

• For visual artists with an HBO Bachelor’s in visual arts, the graduation date marks the start of professional practice (including any gap before postgraduate study).

• For those without an arts degree, the date of first professional presentation counts.

• For curators/art observers, one year of relevant activity demonstrated via exhibitions, publications, research or self-initiated projects.
• Are artistically active and embedded in the professional visual arts or cultural heritage sector in the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
• Are not receiving any other Mondriaan Fund support covering the same costs at the time of application.
• Are not enrolled full-time in Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD or other postdoctoral programmes (part-time under 20 hours/week is permitted).
• Hold or can obtain a Dutch Personal Records Database registration if not a Dutch citizen.
• Hold a Dutch bank account (or provide recent bank statement) and, if applicable, Chamber of Commerce registration for a sole-proprietorship.
• Submit separate applications (with distinct forms and attachments) for up to two residencies per round, indicating a residency preference for each.
• May receive a maximum of one Residency grant per calendar year.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

- Applicants must personally contribute at least 10% of the total work-period costs, which the Fund automatically includes in its calculation; this may be covered by personal funds, third-party contributions, an interest-free Fonds Kwadraat loan or crowdfunding.
• Grant amounts vary by residency location, duration and anticipated travel costs; Caribbean applicants may receive higher allowances when justified.
• Application deadline: 11 September 2025, 16:00 (Dutch time) / 11:00 (Caribbean time); applications require a user account and are processed over a three-month period; no retrospective awards.
• Mandatory attachments include: explanation of practice and cultural entrepreneurship, CV, project plan and motivation, (visual) documentation PDF, documentation list, and proof of eligibility (diploma, residency registration, bank/Chamber of Commerce details).
• Attachments must adhere to technical specifications (max. 500 MB total; no hyperlinks; prescribed page limits).
• Some residencies are restricted to visual artists or only to curators/art observers; detailed residency conditions are listed separately on the Fund’s website.
• If two residencies are applied for, the advisory committee assesses the quality of practice and entrepreneurship once for both; host residencies make final participant selections and may conduct interviews.
