What is the Road Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) optimised user-centric solutions for energy efficiency design and consistent range throughout weather conditions (2ZERO Partnership) Call?

Grant Description
This call supports the development and demonstration of user-centric, cost-effective thermal and energy management solutions for light duty and light commercial electric vehicles. It aims to research user comfort requirements, integrate external data and smart city standards, and apply intelligent predictive energy management to minimize range loss under extreme weather conditions. Prototypes or mock-up vehicles must be demonstrated in relevant environments, meeting automotive standards and inte...
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Project results are expected to deliver:

• A validated set of user requirements and usage acceptance limits (e.g. acceptable range loss for cabin climatization) for diverse vehicle user groups and driving habits under various weather conditions.

• Demonstration of innovative, affordable LDV/LCV energy management solutions in a prototypical system (mock-up vehicle) under extreme ambient conditions, benchmarked against the State of the Art, balancing comfort (temperature, humidity, CO₂) and driving range.

• Reduction of user-specific vehicle range loss due to climatization at extreme conditions by at least 30% compared to the State of the Art, from normal (10–20 °C) to extreme ambient temperatures, without increasing system cost.

• Optimal energy management achieving a 10% improvement in total energy demand for both thermal system and powertrain by integrating future smart-city standards (speed control, environmental forecasting, swarm information, grid peak-load periods).
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

Proposals must:

• Preserve right-sized battery benefits (affordability, resource/energy savings) while reducing driving-range impact of occasional extreme weather for LDVs and LCVs, especially on longer trips.

• Meet relevant automotive standards (e.g. ISO 7730, ISO 14505-4) under normal use.

• Adopt a novel, user-centric, system-level thermal management approach (including possible vehicle-infrastructure interfaces) that minimises energy use, simplifies system architecture and does not increase vehicle/system cost.

• Analyse and validate user requirements, acceptance limits and usage models to set design criteria.

• Establish a holistic optimisation framework using usage scenarios and external data to avoid cascading safety margins and oversizing.

• Explore grid integration potentials without overloading during extreme conditions.

• Develop and integrate AI-based predictive energy management for seldom extreme weather, balancing costs, complexity and user preferences.

• Integrate all concepts into a prototype/mock-up vehicle and demonstrate in a relevant environment.
