What is the Robust and trustworthy GenerativeAI for Robotics and industrial automation (RIA) (AI/Data/Robotics & Made in Europe Partnerships) Call?

Grant Description
This call supports research and innovation actions integrating generative artificial intelligence into robotics and industrial automation. Projects must choose either Type A (generative AI foundation models for robotic autonomy) or Type B (trustworthy generative AI solutions for manufacturing) and deliver advanced foundation models, fine-tune them via financial support to third parties, and validate through real-world use cases. The aim is to boost productivity, adaptability, reliability, safety...
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Type A projects will deliver:

• Advanced generative AI foundation models for robotics with enhanced autonomy, adaptability, versatility and robustness.

• Real-time environment understanding, planning and control under physical constraints, including human-in-the-loop cooperation.

• Validated solutions via fine-tuning and end-to-end demonstrations in industrial automation use-cases.

• Portable, bias-mitigated, safety-certified models deployable at the edge, compliant with AI Act requirements.
Type B projects will deliver:

• Next-generation generative AI solutions tailored to manufacturing data, providing measurable gains in productivity, cost-efficiency, quality, flexibility, resilience, sustainability and circularity.

• Automated tools to enhance certification/compliance, streamline installation/commissioning/decommissioning and accelerate high-mix production.

• Digital production systems and deployment frameworks enabling rapid, large-scale reconfiguration of manufacturing assets.

• Demonstrated improvements in resource efficiency, time-to-market and reduced manual interventions in real-world manufacturing environments.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Choose exactly one focus area: Type A (Generative AI for Robotics in industrial automation) or Type B (Trustworthy, robust generative AI for improved manufacturing).

• Ensure balanced portfolio: budget split evenly between Type A and B projects at call level, but each proposal addresses only one type.

• Type A proposals must:
– Develop advanced foundation models enabling real-time environment learning, simulation, planning and control under physical constraints.
– Integrate human-in-the-loop mechanisms for decision enhancement.
– Address data quality/volume trade-offs; pool sensitive industrial data via secure mechanisms (e.g. trusted third party).
– Explore model distillation for edge deployment; mitigate bias via diverse training data.
– Ensure safety and cybersecurity aligned with the EU AI Act.

• Type B proposals must:
– Target at least one manufacturing use-case: (1) digital technology robustness/data management; (2) automated product/process certification; (3) sustainable, efficient manufacturing automation; (4) automated deployment/reconfiguration tools.
– Employ one or more approaches: AI foundation model applications, digital production systems for high-mix production, or automated deployment tools.
– Secure acquisition of quality manufacturing data from industry partners or third parties.

• All proposals must allocate up to EUR 30 million to foundation model development, focus on up to six use-cases, and earmark at least EUR 10 million for FSTP fine-tuning mini-projects (max EUR 2 million each).
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Eligible participants: legal entities in EU Member States, Iceland, Norway, Canada, Israel, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Entities controlled by non-eligible countries require special guarantees; high-risk suppliers banned.

• Minimum EUR 10 million of requested EU funding must support third-party grants (FSTP); max EUR 2 million per third party or consortium.

• Compliance with Horizon Europe MGA, Financial Regulation, AI Act, and EU strategic autonomy restrictions.

• Proposals must demonstrate access to sufficient HPC resources (EuroHPC or national centres) for pre-training; describe access strategy.

• Page limit exceptions: +3 pages for business case and exploitation strategy.

• Mandatory cohesion tasks with the co-programmed European Partnership on AI, Data and Robotics (ADRA) and the Gen AI 4 EU central Hub CSA.

• Encouraged synergies: build on previous EU-funded results, collaborate with relevant European, national or regional initiatives, contribute to standardisation and interoperability.
