Grant Description
Supports organisation of scientific meetings and consultations in the natural and physical sciences to foster national and international networks, exchange of research and ideas, and formation of research communities
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Facilitate and strengthen national and international academic networks and collaboration across mono-, inter- and transdisciplinary boundaries in the natural and physical sciences.
Promote knowledge building and exchange of research and ideas.
Support the formation and development of new (cross-domain) research teams and consortia.
Build and sustain active research communities through low-threshold funding of scientific meetings and consultations.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

Applicants must hold a paid position (at least until the meeting date) as a full, associate or assistant professor; researcher with a comparable position; postdoc; or PhD candidate at one of the following Dutch institutions:
• Universities in the Kingdom of the Netherlands
• University medical centres
• Institutes affiliated to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) or NWO
• Netherlands Cancer Institute
• Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (Nijmegen)
• Naturalis Biodiversity Center
• Advanced Research Centre for NanoLithography (ARCNL)
• Princess Máxima Center
Research questions must be within or overlap with earth sciences, astronomy, chemistry, computer science, life sciences, physics or mathematics.
Events can be proposed up to one year before the first meeting day. Applications are submitted continuously via the ISAAC system, with deadlines tied to proposed meeting dates (approximately two months prior).

Special Conditions

The WBO programme budget (€600,000 original) is 37% remaining (June 2025); awards are granted in order of receipt until the budget is depleted, at which point the instrument closes.
Applications undergo an internal eligibility and formal check by the NWO Science office; no external review is requested. Final funding decisions are made by the Board of NWO Domain Science.
Post-event, NWO may conduct random verifications to confirm that meetings/consultations took place and may request additional information. Funded events must publicise NWO support (e.g. display the NWO logo on programmes or websites).
After award, a data management plan must be prepared before project start. Applicants must use the prescribed ISAAC application form (PDF) and budget form (Excel).
