What is the SSbD bio-based solutions to replace hazardous conventional chemicals for textiles production Call?

Grant Description
This call funds innovation actions to develop and demonstrate safe-and-sustainable-by-design bio-based chemicals and processes as substitutes for hazardous conventional chemicals in textile production. It addresses the EU Bioeconomy Strategy, Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability and circular textiles strategy, aiming to reduce environmental pollution, improve sustainability and circularity of textiles, and deliver socio-economic benefits across the value chain.
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

Successful proposals will:
• Address the EU Bioeconomy Strategy, the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability and the EU strategy for sustainable and circular textiles.
• Contribute indirectly to the Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030”, Objective 2: prevent and eliminate pollution of oceans, seas and waters.
• Deliver availability of SSbD bio-based solutions for the textile industry that meet technical and market performance requirements.
• Enhance sustainability, circularity and safety in the textiles sector.
• Reduce pollution (including micropollutants and emerging contaminants) across production, use and end-of-life phases of textile value chains, with positive downstream effects.
• Generate improved social impacts along the textile value chain and broad socio-economic benefits.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

Proposals must:
• Demonstrate SSbD bio-based alternatives to both production-process and end-product hazardous chemicals, applicable to bio-based and fossil-based textile value chains.
• Ensure full compatibility of novel chemicals and/or processes with existing textile manufacturing technologies and practices.
• Rigorously test and benchmark end-product performance (technical, human health safety, environmental) against relevant standards over the full life cycle, specifying all considered end-of-life scenarios (e.g. recycling, remanufacturing).
• Employ the Multi-Actor Approach (MAA) with active involvement of all key actors: textile manufacturers (especially SMEs and brand owners), raw material suppliers, process industries, regional/local officials and workers’ HS&E representatives.
• Incorporate and advance the EU SSbD framework by providing thresholds to support criteria definition, identifying data gaps (safety, environmental, socio-economic) and prioritizing data collection.
• Demonstrate complementarity with existing and past R&I projects addressing similar challenges (Horizon 2020/Horizon Europe Clusters, Textiles for the Future partnership, BBI JU/CBE JU projects).
