What is the Towards autonomous robot collectives delivering collaborative tasks in dynamic unstructured construction environments Call?

Grant Description
This Horizon Europe call seeks radical innovations in autonomous collaborative on-site construction robotics to overcome the challenges of dynamic, unstructured building environments. Projects must design "for-robotics" digital production and assembly chains, develop a TRL 4 multirobotic assembly system combining simplifed structural modules with human-robot collaboration, and demonstrate an autonomous assembly sequence in a laboratory environment. Expected outputs include validated multirobotic...
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• Validated TRL 4 autonomous collaborative multi-robotic assembly of discrete modular structures, demonstrating feasibility for representative pavilions (bridges, vaults, walls, foundations, etc.) using novel materials and in-situ resources.
• A scalable autonomous mobile multi-robotic platform with defined safe states/modes, effective human-robot and robot-robot interactions, and documented roadmap to full commercial dimensions.
• Identification of system resilience limits under unstructured laboratory conditions, with recommendations for further technology development.
• Acceleration of the digitalized off-site production and on-site assembly chain, supporting electrified, zero-emission construction and reducing on-site emissions, costs and risks.
• Contribution to the European Green Deal, AI Strategy and digital/green transitions: alleviating labour shortages, boosting construction productivity and competitiveness, improving worker safety.
• Creation of a lighthouse for affordable housing, renovation wave, circular construction and infrastructure development.
• Enhanced portfolio impact through mutual learning on mapping/navigating unstructured environments, force-aware manipulation, swarm collectives and commercialization pathways.
• Joint development of performance metrics and public communication strategies to accelerate sector adoption of radical construction robotics innovations.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Address one or more of the three main construction tasks (site preparation, substructure, superstructure) applied to buildings and infrastructure (including adjacent segments such as coastal protection foundations).
• Deliver all three specific objectives (TRL 4 module system, multi-robotic platform, TRL 4 demonstration).
• Demonstrate technologies at least at human scale (volume, mass, inertia) and ideally at real-world architectural scale.
• Incorporate “design-for-robotic-assembly” aspects: robot-material interfaces, module connectors, embedded sensing.
• Include virtual simulation of disassembled, intermediate and final states, and documented validation of key design decisions.
• Apply a structured systems engineering approach for functional analysis, human-machine function allocation, system states/modes and safety.
• Anticipate scalability to full commercial application.
• Exclude primary on-site 3D-printing of cementitious materials or polymers.
• Proposals may adapt existing industrial robots or develop novel multi-robotic platforms.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Applications involving evolution of European communication networks (5G, post-5G or related technologies) are subject to restrictions per Annex II-B.1.
• Consortium eligibility: single legal entities (excluding mid-caps and large companies) or consortia of ≥2 independent entities from ≥2 Member/Associated Countries (for 2-entity consortia) or ≥3 entities (one in a Member State and two others in different Member/Associated Countries).
• Proposals must meet general admissibility and eligibility conditions (Annex 2 EIC WP 2025) and EIC Pathfinder specific requirements.
• Page limit: Part B Sections 1-3 (Excellence, Impact, Implementation) max 30 A4 pages; excess pages not evaluated.
• Lump Sum grant under Horizon Europe (HORIZON-AG-LS model); financial, operational capacity, exclusion rules per Annex 2.
• Eligible countries and other conditions per EIC WP 2025.
