Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• Generation of innovative computational technologies and paradigms that leverage unconventional approaches to tackle complex scientific and societal challenges.

• Strengthened and sustainable Japan–Netherlands research networks, with enhanced international talent mobility and leadership development among early-career researchers.

• Demonstrable societal and scientific impact through translation of new methods into prototypes, proof-of-concepts or scalable solutions in areas such as quantum algorithms, neuromorphic architectures, bio-inspired computational models, and integrated processing systems.

• A cadre of researchers with bilateral experience, ready to become future leaders in high-tech information processing.

• Publications, patents, workshops or follow-on projects that reflect the collaborative outputs and interdisciplinary integration achieved under this call.
Funded areas

Scope Requirements

• Consortium composed of at least one Japan-based main applicant (JST) and one Netherlands-based main applicant (NWO), plus any co-applicants, research participants (Japan side only), cooperation partners and/or co-funders.

• Roughly equal numbers of (co-)applicants and balanced workload on both sides.

• Project duration 48–60 months.

• Budget per project: NL side €800,000–€1,150,000; JP side up to ¥250,000,000. Funds to cover personnel, materials, knowledge utilization and management.

• All early-career researchers (PhD/postdocs) must spend at least 20% of their employment time on an extended research stay in Japan, with appropriate budget reserved.

• Joint proposal in English, submitted in parallel to NWO’s ISAAC system and JST’s e-Rad system by 14:00 CEST/JST on 9 September 2025.

• Compulsory annexes: budget form (Excel), applicant declaration, co-funding statement (if applicable), embedding guarantee (if specified), consortium agreement.

Special Conditions

• Equitable partnership and sustainable collaboration required: evidence of inter-institutional cooperation, balanced contributions and frequent exchanges will be assessed.

• Parallel, synchronous submission to both national systems; applications not submitted in both will be ineligible.

• Use of NWO-provided templates and forms (application form, declaration of intent, budget form, embedding guarantee, consortium agreement). Annexes (except budget form) as unsecured PDFs.

• Mandatory English language.

• A non-mandatory statement of intent deadline 31 July 2025.

• Data management plan preparation required after award, prior to project start.

• Applicants must create/verify ISAAC accounts and ensure all organisations are registered in time.

• Co-funders must provide formal declarations.

• Eligibility and assessment subject to JST and NWO rules; refer to JST ASPIRE coordination for JP rules.
