What is the Veni - Social Sciences and Humanities 2025 Call?

Grant Description
Veni funds early career researchers who obtained their doctorate within the last three years to develop and conduct independent, academically innovative research projects of up to three years, with the aim of nurturing their transition to research independence and generating scientific and societal impact in the social sciences and humanities.
Required Results for Successful Funding

Expected Outcomes

• Establishment of a new, independent line of academically innovative SSH research.

• Advancement of the researcher’s academic profile and transition to research independence.

• Production of research outputs with high scientific quality and clear innovative character (75% assessment weighting).

• Generation of tangible scientific and/or societal impact (25% assessment weighting).

• Strengthened capacity for applicants to develop leadership in SSH and secure further funding opportunities.

• Compliance with best practices in data management, ethical research conduct, and institutional embedding.

Scope Requirements

• Applicant must have obtained a PhD within three years before 1 January 2025 or between 1 January 2025 and 2 September 2025 (extensions possible under specific circumstances).

• Open to candidates of any nationality, tenured or non-tenured.

• Project duration: maximum three years (full-time); part-time (≥0.4 FTE) allowed with proportional extension up to four years.

• Maximum budget request: €320,000 (pro rata reduction for shorter projects).

• Pre-proposal deadline: 2 September 2025, 14:00 CEST; full proposal deadline: 27 January 2026, 14:00 CET.

• Submission via ISAAC to one of six SSH domain panels (applicant selects).

• Pre-proposal must include: Evidence Based CV (academic profile, key output, short research idea) and signed embedding guarantee.

• Full proposal must include: research description (max 2,000 words), scientific/societal impact statement (max 750 words), data management section, budget plan, budget form, and, if amended, updated embedding guarantee; optional co-funding declaration or statement exceeding maximum funding.
Additional Conditions for Applicants

Special Conditions

• Part-time appointments below 0.4 FTE are not permitted.

• If part-time (0.4–1.0 FTE), project duration may be extended proportionally by up to one year only.

• Embedding guarantee is mandatory at pre-proposal stage; any changes must be submitted with the full proposal.

• After a negative provisional advice on the pre-proposal, applicants may request correction of factual inaccuracies.

• In SSH domain, no external peer reviewers are commissioned; assessment is conducted by interdisciplinary NWO panels—applicants must choose the correct panel for their discipline.

• All forms and explanatory notes must be used as provided in ISAAC; on Apple computers ‘Outline’ view may be needed to reveal embedded guidance.

• Responsible data management is required; a detailed Data Management Plan must be prepared post-award and before project start.
